Alaska 2019 - SoCal to AK
Today we drove from Whitehorse to Nugget City, just west of Watson Lake. Roads are in much better shape than when we drove through last month. About half is an 8 with the rest a 7. We made great time today. Tomorrow we head down the Cassiar.

Today we drove from Nugget City to Shadow Mountain RV park in Iskut. We left early and took our time - got here about 12:30. About 20-30 miles of the Cassiar has been repaved and is in great shape - about an 8. The rest varies between a 6 and 7. Gnat pass was not paved when we went through there 2 years ago, but it is now. Was a nice drive but surprisingly saw no wildlife. We saw at least 8 bears on this drive 2 years ago. On to Stewart tomorrow.

Canadian Tire stores in Canada carry DEF as well and there’s one in Whitehorse.

Today we drove from Iskut to Stewart, BC. The Cassiar road varied between a 6 and 7. The 37A to Stewart was a 7, plus a visually beautiful drive. We saw 6 bears and several pheasants that were in the road and wouldn’t move so I had to avoid hitting them. Stupid birds. [emoji13]. There was one section of construction with a pilot car but not much of a delay.

We're from Europe and going to another end of the Earth is not that often, so we'll try to hit as many locations as possible.

FYI you can't drive to Ketchikan - fly for ferry/boat only

Today we drove from Stewart, BC to near Smithers, BC. As i said in last post, the 37A is mostly a 7. The Cassiar from Meziadin to the Yellowhead is in great shape, 7 to 8 most of the way. The Yellowhead is also in great shape - mostly 8. There was one construction delay at the Nass River bridge just south of Meziadin. Not much delay, but an uncontrolled one lane bridge and some bumpy dirt made for a bit of a pain.

We are moving on down the road. Today we drove from Smithers to Hixon, BC. Yellowhead and Cariboo both in great shape. Mostly 8, except for road construction through Burns Lake.

Are you taking 97 to kamloops? #24 from 100 mile house to the #5 at little fort is a good highway but a very steep 20 Kms downhill at the east end.

Today we drove from Hixon, BC to the Canyon Alpine RV Park in Boston Bar, BC. The Cariboo south of Hixon was not in as good shape as north of Hixon. Mostly a 7 to Cache Creek, with some minor delays for paving operations around 93 Mile. The TransCanada from Boston Flats to Spences Bridge is in poor shape - mostly a 6 with many sections of crumbling pavement. From there south the pavement is mostly a 7, but this section is very curvy, with many ascents and descents, and the aggressive truck drivers make the drive stressful at times. However, there are many sections with passing lanes to let the truckers by. Nevertheless, the scenery is beautiful. We saw bighorn sheep near Spences Bridge, as well as an eagle.
The change in landscape from Hixon to Boston Flats is amazing for such a short distance. Hixon is lush and wet, and Boston Flats looks like the dry part of Montana.
In 2017 we took the TCH east from Cache Creek, and then down the Coq to avoid Fraser Canyon. Although the Coq is 4 lane, there's so much up and down that I didn't think it was worth the detour this time. The Thompson and Fraser canyon drive is curvy, but the scenery is worth it.
On Sunday, we'll head down the TCH, fuel up at the Hope Flying J, and head to Shelton, WA. Not sure whether we'll cross the border at Sumas or Lynden. We'll watch for the times on the signs on the TCH.

Good grief, why did I choose Sumas to cross? What a mess? These jerks that pop into duty free and then cut the line. And railroad tracks in the middle of it all? Such a mess.

Alaska 2019 - SoCal to AK
This past Sunday we drove from Boston Bar to the Little Creek Casino in Shelton, WA. The TCH to Hope, BC was mostly a 7, but pretty curvy. From there, the highway becomes 4 lane is mostly an 8. We left very early, so we were at the border around 8 am. The information signs along the TCH said the delay at Sumas was 10 minutes and at Lynden was 5 minutes. We decided to go to Sumas. Big mistake. Hour long delay. Fortunately they opened the far right lane just when we got there, otherwise we would not have been able to make the tight right turn for the adjacent lane. After the crossing, the winding 24 miles of road to get to the I-5 was narrow and much more difficult to navigate than WA 539. The I-5 south and then the 405 was mostly an 8. Getting through Olympia is a bit windy but not too bad.
