Alaska to lower 48, April or May?

Going to head south in my class C towing my Fiat 500 either the first 2 weeks in April, or the first 2 weeks in May. For those of you who have traveled the Alcan early in the year, do you think the road would better/worse during either of these time frames? Planning on staging the motorhome for a cross country trip starting in July. Main concerns would be the roads falling apart/potholes during or after break up.

Of course be prepared for lots of rain in either month, as soon as the weather breaks though the ALCAN road construction/repair will kick in, which will slow you down more than potholes and frost heaves.

We go north in May. Watch the weather. You really do want the Yukon and northern BC to have thawed enough to open at least the parking in the RV parks. Some years are fine in April, but I have seen Tok only open a few RV spots by May 23 due to snow and cold. Call the Yukon Motel in Teslin to see if they are open, and Toad River Lodge in BC, before you leave. It varies year to year. Camping at minus something with no power is OK on a snowmachine, but a bit less so in an RV.
