I did make an error in my earlier statement that the diesel engine affects payload as it really does not. The weight of the diesel is carried by the front wheels and a camper's weight is carried by the rear wheels. The 800 lb. engine weight differential affects only the theoretical payload when taking the GVWR and subtracting the total weight of the truck. Manufacturers also provide a calculated value for the payload that is based on the weakest link. This is the tires with a SRW truck and these can be changed out. Second variable is the leaf springs (and the main difference between a 2500 and a 3500 truck) and these can be added to as well at minor expense and effort. When towing a heavy trailer people routinely add a weight distributing hitch or a pin for 5th wheel trailer and often air bags, but for some reason the concept has not carried over to folks hauling a heavy camper. There is nothing wrong with adding or replacing tires, shocks, lead springs, anti-sway bar, etc. to accommodate the load.
