Dually GVWR
Looking at getting a truck camper. Specifically the Lance 1172. Will be selling my current 06 SRW f350. I'm looking at not having to put any more money down than what I get for my truck. I found a mint 07 GMC 3500 dually with the 8.1L but the GVWR is I believe 11,400 or 11,800 or somewhere in between. The RAWR is 8800 though. Seems strange because my SRW f350 is 11,200. I really like this truck and I know the wheel and tire capacity plus the RAWR is plenty but I'm more than likely gonna be way over GVWR. Do I have anything to worry about of I got that truck?

Dually GVWR
not a thing. load it up and go have fun. gvwr is not a legal lawsuit. you can sue anybody for anything, winning is a different game.

You either spend the time & money to do it 'right' and be 100% in compliance... or save yourself the expense and aggravation and simply do as you please.

My 2016 SRW RAM 3500 is registered at 12,300 pounds and I still go over that with a stinky little Northstar camper in the back.
To make matters worse the truck-camper certification for my truck is only 1301 pounds!
So I'm thinking laj may indeed have the best answer.
Buy the truck, load the camper, and have fun!

I'm not totally concerned by being over GVWR since axle and tire capacity will be good. Having not owned a TC but I do own a 42ft 5er and it handles well. I know getting the right truck is even more essential for a TC. How well do they handle at say 85% of your trucks payload capacity with a dually?

Hah! That's a good question. . .
Where on earth could you find a truck camper owner who runs at only 85% capacity?
Well OK, perhaps since were talking about 'dually' trucks, you may actually find a TC rolling at 85% capacity rather than 150% capacity the SRW boys typically run at.
Since the Lance 1172 has an advertised wet weight of 5213 pounds. [Truck Camper Magazine rated]. I was wondering what the stated payload of the particular truck you'll be putting the camper on is???
Example Tread Act maximum payload rating shown below. . .

And BTW, I'm a SRW truck camper guy so I am indeed over GVWR myself.

My 2015 F350 dually 6.7L has a GVWR of 14,000 lbs and a payload capacity of 7050 lbs, GCWR31,200 lbs. I pulled a 40 ft 5er with a Gold Wing on Swivel Wheel trailer behind for 3 years. Total weight just over 31,000 lbs. No problems, still driving the dually.
Looking at getting Artic Fox 1140 or 1150 and towing my boat behind to get out of Texas summer hill country heat for a few weeks or perhaps longer. I had a 2009 Lance before, wasn’t impressed, lots of issues, including catching fire. Thank goodness it was under warranty.

My 2 cents...
I kinda' prefer the 1150's kitchen all on one side design over the split design of the 1140.

My '05 Chevy dually also had the tiny little 11,400 GVWR. Fully loaded with my family, 11' TC, and pulling my boat behind I had about 13,100 pounds on the truck axles. I was not over the tire or axle ratings. It handles just fine. I've got many thousands of trouble free miles with it.
The rear axle in these Chevy duallys is an AAM 11.5", it is rated by AAM at 10,912 pounds. The truck's RAWR is limited by the tires mostly.

I'm one of those that has set my rig up to be at 50% of GVWR. I put my Lance 1181 (400 pounds less then the 1172) on my 05 F550 which has a GVWR of 17950 pounds. With that said I carried the same camper on my 97 F350 before that. I was well over my GVWR on that truck and never had an issue. I really believe that the most important numbers to watch out for are the Axle and tire weight rating. Go over those and bad things happen. With large campers like the 1181 and 1172 dual rear wheels are a must for the stability. When you get into GVWR then that is lawyer land and that has nothing to do with reality only what you can prove in court or make a jury believe. Personally I decided that I did not want to have to figure out how to fight in court about my being over weight by a significant amount. If you are over your trucks weight by maybe 10 or 20% that's and accident and likely easier to get out of court with then if you were 100% over weight. I decided to buy a truck that could carry any camper made today or in the past. With 8K of payload on the 550 I have that well covered. This is my personal opinion and not legal advice

Plenty of em for sure. Being a betting man, I am betting no one can cite a verifiable instance where weight has been used in a legal or insurance case in the United States.
