I'm a little confused. Do the fuses blow when you try to start the generator? Or does the generator start and run fine, and then you blow a fuse when you try to turn on something that uses power?

Have you seperated the lowvoltage remote switch wiring and tried it? If so does it still blow a fuse? If so then I think you have a bad control board on the genny. If not locate and repair remote wiring will correct the problem.

About two years ago I had exactly the same problem but with an onan generator (in Bigfoot truck camper). I would blow fuses immediately when trying to start the gen. After a great effort to remove the gen and then taking it to our local onan service, the service person said there was absolutely no problem with the generater...it started immediately in the shop.
Trace the problem to that rocker switched in the stove vent. I did not replace the switch as the wiring was too complicated to trace etc. I put in a factory onan switch, mounted it in a convenient location inside the camper. I had to get a factory wiring harness that connected directly to the onan extern starting swithc...you will probably have to do the same if your problem is the same as ours was.
We have had no problems since we made this modification...used the generator extensively during last year's FL hurricanes. IVER

What fuse is blowing? Does it solely provide power for the generator starter motor? Or a starter solenoid? A defective (shorted) starter or defective solenoid seems like a possibility. You could try eliminating both the remote and the generator-mounted start switch and just jumper the to the solenoid terminal and see if it turns over. Make sure the jumer wire is fused, though!

The 7.5 fuse on the front of the unit. The gen will try to start if I jump the solinoid so it is not the starter. The main breakers don't trip and no other fuses are blowing in the camper.

That was my problem too...that 7.5 amp fuse blowing...the one on the gen. I replaced the small rocker on/off switch on the stove hood with a regular ownan switch:

FXRSCOTTY, let me add that getting the onan out of the generate compartment was a serious and major task. After it was out I was able to connect new onan wiring harness/switch directly to onan geneerator to fire it up from the switch which I later installed inside the camper. Bigfoot had spliced its starter wiring system to the onan wiring loom. I cut off the wire with some dikes, folder over and taped and then installed a regular onan wiring loom...it all came in a nice package....these camper mfg (speaking of Bigfoot now) think they are doing a favor by installing an aftermarket switch on the hood fan. When there is a problem it is almost impossible to sort out the wiring. IVER D

F.Y.I. there was a bad ground inside of the generator itself causing the fuses to blow. The bolt to the ground wire was stripped out and had work loose with vibration. thanks to all who responded. scotty
