Newbie
I currently have a 5th wheel, thinking of going to a truck camper.
I am wondering if it is practical to remove the camper when you get to a rv park or campsite as you do with the 5th wheel and how long it takes. Also can you use the jacks to level the camper or are they just used to load and unload the camper?

Yes to both questions. I prefer to get close to level with blocks under the tires and fine tune with the jacks. Just use jacks when on level ground. There is a camper jack that is better for unloading @ camp ground like you discribed. I don't remember the name.

If I am staying in a site for any length of time I always take the camper off the truck, it is way easier to get in and out of. I always carry four blocks and a few shims or a set of adjustable trailer jack stands and lower the camper base onto them, I keep just enough pressure on the camper jacks to add support. I don't rely on just the jacks alone to support the camper as I have had jacks fail in the past. My wife and I can unload and level the camper fairly quickly if the ground is level, definately a bit harder if you can't find level ground. The first few times were a bit scary untill my wife got the hang of lifting and lowering the camper....

We have seen quite a few TC owners unload the camper at the campsite. A friend of ours has a big Lance. I think it has Happy-Jacks on it, and it does operate via a remote controller. It will bring the camper to within 10 inches of the ground, and he blocks it on short pieces of 6x6 lumber for stablilty.

Welcome, Good Information here^. I always loved my truck campers [4 or 5]. But at that time no electric jacks, still alot of memories from that time. Enjoy the truck camper. Have fun!

We unload our Bigfoot camper at the campground if we are staying a few days and pulling our boat. Its easier to launch the boat without the camper. Our camper has electric Happijacs and those make it easy to load and unload the camper. You do not want to try to lift the truck with the jacks to level it, only lift the camper! You can level the camper if the site is is not too unlevel. If the site is too unlevel you could get the jacks in a bind or bend one of the legs.

Thats our plan we have also. Unload our camper and block it at the campsite. We can free up our truck to handle the boat, for errands, and for side trips. The campsite will remain undisturbed. Good tip about not using the camper jacks to lift the truck. It does not take a lot of extra stress to damage a camper's tie-down points. The link below is a good choice for camper tiedowns. They bolt to the truck's frame and are removable like a hitch ballmount when the camper is not on the truck. The turnbuckles have a spring loaded mechanism to prevent damage to the camper when the truck flexes going over uneven surfaces.
