Can anyone explain what's involved to remedy the problem of oil in the regulator? I assume this involves disassembly and cleaning and I'm wondering if I can do that. Any special tools required?

I take it you are speaking of the LP regulator? If so you should have one that is knowlegable in the gas field to not only clean out the regulator but to treat the tank for moisture with a dehydrant. This dehydrant should be introduced on a regular basis to prevent freeze up problems and flooding regulators.

I had this problem with my Weber grill. The "oil" not only built up in the regulator, it filled the burner tube. After I disconnected the gas line from the grill, I found that propane was leaking from the fitting that attaches to the grill.
I believe that the "oil" was the odorous agent in the propane that collected as a result of the leak.
