Sway Issues

Howdy. Got a Lance 1172. 2011 RAM 3500 Dually. I have 7500lb Air Bags and the Super-hitch Magnum 30k. We typically tow our Rubicon on a car hauler with a 4ft extension.

Getting some sway I don't like. Doesn't matter if we got the Jeep or not. I bought the Helwig 7272 Big Wig Sway bar, but the mounts are right where the hitch mounts to the truck. I can't use the Helwig with the hitch. Talked to a suspension shop and they suggested adding a couple of leafs, but before I go that route and completely ruin the ride of the empty truck, I wanted to check with you all.

Cant comment on a dually swaying. Although my srw, I had my 1140, trailer on behind, air bagged had a fair bit of sway. I installed 2x2 square tube between the overload pads and the pad mounts, so the pads had approx. 1in before the came in contact with the overloads. essentially bringing the overloads into play earlier. Huge difference, did ride rougher though, not as much "bounce" when empty. Was a free upgrade, and 20 min install or removal. I did always keep them in.

I had the blocks in for 6 years no issues. If you go that route, just have to notch the side of the blocks, to imitate the back side of the pad mounts, so they done spin.👍

There used to be a way to mount the BigWig ends to the SuperHitch. Contact Torklift technical support with this issue for some insight.

I had blocks in our '89 W250 Dodge Cummins when hauling the camper for all of the 23 years we had it. I removed them when camper was off for a better ride.

To get them to fit better I cut one side off and welded it back reversed, making one side concave. They fit perfectly over the part the spring contacted (pad mounts?) that way.

I played around with adding and removing spring leaves some with it too. For me it was difficult, and took a while, to find the best compromise between having the camper on (more leaves, rougher ride, and less sway) and having it off (fewer leaves, better ride, and more sway), it was for the most part a trial and error thing. I had "pro's" work on it once, but finally ended up re-arranging spring leaves myself. The blocks helped a lot.

Thank you for all the responses. My knowledge of 3500 Suspensions was limited but I am learning. I bought some blocks to add to the upper overload springs from SD Springs. Do you think I should get the blocks from Torklift for the lower overload springs as well?

We are loading the truck camper up next week and it will stay loaded through the end of July. Think the lower spring blocks are necessary as well?

Again it is a 2011 RAM 3500 DRW. Our Lance 1172 is about 4500 pounds, so we are overloaded a little bit.

IMHO, if it were me, I would start with the uppers. I think you will notice a very bid difference. I had a Lance 1140 on a SRW, worked well for me.

I would agree. Add the blocks you are thinking about and drove it around a bit. That should tell you a lot about how close you are to your goal. If it isn't what you want, try something different, moving either to a stiffer suspension of to a softer one depending on what is desired.

We hauled a camper of similar weight, a 11.5' Caribou with gen and AC, for 23 years and more than 200k miles, including 1.5 months in AK, on a Dodge Cummins W250 SRW with overloads and blocks without mishap. After retirement we lived in our camper while traveling for up to 3 months at a time. It was on the truck from early summer until the late fall elk bow hunting hunting season was over. Given the choice, I would prefer it over either of the two RV's we now have, but my wifes' health problems dictated a change. I loved the thing.

Sway Issues

If he is hauling a trailer with a 5500# Rubi, he is adding another 750-1000# of weight on the rear end. With a SuperTruss or similar a weight distribution only helps so much due to the chain stabilization for the extension. If his issue is also happening when he is not towing, I would ask if he has the airbags plumbed together or fill separately? If they are plumbed together, that is most likely his issue.
