With the price of pickup beds and the price of slide-ins today....I suspect that there were different way to tie these things down.
I have never seen a stake pocket tie down but I would like to see how it worked.

I had stake hole tie downs on my first turck/camper. It was an 8 1/2' cabover and the tie downs slipped into the stake hole and were angled down. It came with turnbuckles that attached to hooks on the camper. At the time I didn't think too much about the way it was attached. Now I would not want to use anything that could break so easily. I was lucky.
Tork Lifts, they mount to the frame, are very strong. Might want to use a spring mount to keep the tension from being too much for the camper when the truck flexes.
