Also wondering would a one ton or 3/4 ton truck do the job as I am the type rather have more than I need than be sorry I didn't go for the better and not be under what I need

It entirely depends on the job you want it to do. So, it might be more or less what you need, depending.

Kind of depends on what camper you are going with. Some can only be carried on a one-ton, and some only on a DUALLY, due to their extreme weight.

Talk to RVer's that have been doing it for a long time and ask what type of RV's they have owned. Usually they will have a long list of different units. Might as well face the fact that you will probably have several different units over the years. I bought a 1 ton dually and have already changed my mind about what I am going to buy. At least I have a truck that has a lot of flexibility for towing/carrying. I have owned a camper, 5th wheel and travel trailer.

If you are pulling the old 13' Scamp I used to tow. YES, just about any truck bigger than a Tonka will do the job.

If you are pulling a 40 foot VOLTAGE.. Bigger is better in the tow vehicle department.
