We have just found a considerable amount of dry white powdery stuff in our propane compartment of our Bigfoot truck camper. It is heavier than powder but not grainy like salt. Any ideas?

There are many possible sources of dry white powder in a propane compartment.. First, any aluminum that may be in there turns to white powder if it degrades.. And that is what I suspect. Inspect things like the handle of the tank valve.. ALso look above the tank.. Chalk from the paint on the tank can look like fine powder. Brass, should not turn white and most of the hardware there should be either brass or steel.. The housing for the regulator however, can be the kind of metal that powders if it breaks down or oxidizes So inspect the regulator as well.
Basically INSPECT everything be prepared to buy a new regulator since that is I think the worst case. Every other suspect is less expensive to fix.
Thank you for the info! Yes this is a new finding, we use the truck camper frequently, in fact have been in it since the end of April. Will definitely watch out for the DEA.
Old post but the correct answer is that it is gelcoat residue from the tanks moving about. I have it in my propane compartment as well as my battery compartment
I should have let everyone know earlier but the actual problem is ants! They are a type of carpenter ant and have gotten into the walls and are removing the Styrofoam insulation To build their nests and that is the white powdery stuff we were seeing. The RV repair guy said he has seen them eat large areas of roofs that he has had to replace. Watch out for the ants! As it turns out they won't only ruin your picnic but your camper as well!!!
