Could be like me.... Lost my hearing in my right ear due to Meneir's. DW will be on the other side of a wall on my right side, looking away from me, then will be about 40' away and talk normal expecting me to hear her while I am watching the television...

I've always had a hearing problem.
I'm female voice deaf. My Mother and both wives have said that - many times. I know, cause I wasn't watching TV when they complained to other people

a number of years ago at the State Fair there was a Portable Hearing tester, it was free, my Sweet one said I was loosing my hearing and to go in have it tested.
She was right, the guy came out with me and said to Her " He has hearing lose in the High range, he cant hear young Children's Voices or Whinny Women," She told me to NEVER say HUH to me again!!
