He (I) would say nothing. I was proud that my mates in the Navy and marines loved sucking up that sea duty. In 27+ years my bride was with me all except 21 months. Thats the reason I chose the AF over the others. Navy tried to get me to transfer to thier nuc power program when I was an E-6 and I told them without shore duty it was a non-starter.

Not much, there's no such thing.

The Air Force has Master Sergeants (E-7), Senior Master Sergeants (E-8) and Chief Master Sergeants (E-9).

Never made it that high up the totem pole, medically retired as a Staff Sergeant (E-5). I had a bit over twelve years in Uncle Sam's Flying Club, nearly eight years of that time spent in overseas duty.

I remember a song in a movie that went like that. "We joined the Navy, to see the world! And what do we see? We see the sea!"

The technical training school I attended was the Defense Information School, which trains military public affairs officers, journalists, Armed Forces Network broadcasters, and combat camera persons. The school is "purple suit" where all branches were trained and all branches provided instructors. One of my most 'colorful' instructors was a Navy master chief. I had to do a five minute television interview with him.

None of the footage was usable, as every fourth word was profane.

That was funny, but remember that when you speak of what is quoted above that the Marine Corps is a Department Of The Navy, the Men's Department.

Don't know about AF master Chief, I could ask my daughter , she was AF 1987-1996 , she was working on retirement until they sent her to Biloxi, that made her decide to get out.. of course it made me happy,, you know how mother's are.. Helen

Ok, I stand corrected. During my 22 years in Combat Arms (Armor) in the Army. we called the E-9's Sgt Major. The guy with the Star in the center was a Command SGM, the guy with a blank space was a staff guy. Really simple. So what do you call a E-9 in the AF? My golfing buddy here at the Nellis AFB Fam Camp wants to be called Chief. doesn't want to be called late for Happy Hour either!

Four years in the Navy. Sea duty all except radio school, boot camp and one year on shore duty at Cheltenham Md. The rest of the time on the Norton sailing the ocean blue. Like I tell civies, Air force guys and Soldiers.....''I have peed in more ocean than you probably have ever seen''......

Nuff said ...... God bless our troops regardless of 'stripe or service attachment, or color of uniform'.......... God bless them all and all who served.......
