RGVTEXAN - Likewise for Army brats. Three sisters, born in Japan, KS, and NY respectively; a brother born in GA; and me born in Germany. For me, 5 elementary in Japan, NY, KS, TX, and GA; 2 Jr.highs, in TX and GA; and, 1 high schools, in GA. "We" the family retired to Texas in '63, and we each have kinda developed accents as a result. It's a great life if you embrace it.

A statement I made in France while serving in the Army in the early '80s to a young french socialist/marxist may apply here...

When he complained about Regan and The United States in general, I told him that I was not saying that the United States was the best place on the planet. I went on to tell him, however, I had been to the 2nd best place, and it was much better than that!

Perhaps these worldly folks who have moved so much and seen so much, and then chose to live in Texas have said the same thing, with their choices.

I am saying this as a reluctant resident of Massachusetts, having visited Texas but never having called it home. To me, voting with their choice to live there says an awful lot!

I was going to suggest that rgvtexan most likely has more than one accent. Words that begin with odd consonants have a texan accent, words with more than 4 sylables have a MA accent, words that end in vowels have a GA accent, etc.

Maybe! I spend the summer 80 miles south of Canada. Working on getting that language down. Spent last weekend on a car rally with a bunch of Canadians, we seemed to understand each other.

I think it has something to do with driving slow during rush hour...
