Take 1000 and add 40 to it.. Now add another 1000. Now add 30.
Add another 1000. Now add 20. Now add another 1000
Now add 10. What is the total?
In my head I get 4010

The calculator says 4100

I would give some of the students on my bus a math quiz by asking them to give the next number after I gave them 4 n8umbers. 1096, 1097, 1098, 1099 and stop. Most will say 2000 but the real answer is 1100.

My guess is you are getting 4100 because you are starting with 1000, reading it carefully, it says "Take 1000" which means you are minus 1000 to start, then add 40, which takes you to -960, add another 1000, takes you to 40, then add 30 takes you to 70, add 1000, 1070, add 20 takes you to 1090, add 1000 takes you to 2090 then add the final 10 equals 2100.

Wow, now that I work it out that way, even I was wrong!

My wife better not see this...

4100 like everyone else.

Step one when I see a "Problem" like that is "TRICK, Do MATH DOUBLE CAREFUL"

Step 2: Math major, i have been known to calculate the theoretical top speed of a rollar coaster IN MY HEAD. ... I came up with "70 mph give or take a couple due to rounding error" (Magnum 2000 at Ceader Point) Well the kids who ask looked kind of like 'yea, right"

When we got to the gate.. I ask the attendant (they were in the gate next to me) and the anwer was, at that time. 72mph.. (Within my "give or take a couple" window) today, i'm told they have slowed it down to 68,, the other end of the same window.

So your problem.. not a problem.

Home is where I park it!
