Note: This must be done in your head only.
Do NOT use paper and pencil or a calculator.

Take 1000 and add 40 to it.. Now add another 1000. Now add 30.
Add another 1000. Now add 20. Now add another 1000
Now add 10. What is the total?

I got 5000 the first time. The problem comes when you are at 4090 and add the last 10. For some reason some of us tend to go from 4090 to 5000 instead of 4100. I guess my brain dislikes skipping a column.
