While not quite GPS, when I was being 'taught' on how to drive an APC (armored personnel carrier), we did not have any on board comms. The TC(tank commander) had a broom handle and he would tap me on the left side of my helmet to go left; tap on the right side to turn right; and 'lightly' on the top to speed up. When I did some thing wrong, he generally 'broke' the broom handle over my helmet and it was time to head back to the motor pool. I 'learned' real quick!!!!!
