Sayings that make you go: "HUH?"

My mother used to say: "If I told you once, I told you forty-eleven times!!" HUH?

It drove us nuts! We would reply that YOU MEAN 51 MA. There is no such number as forty-eleven.

How about a news report that stated "The car had gunshot holes in it." I know what bullet holes are, but what are gunshot holes?

And if you told her that, was it followed shortly with a smack to the side of the head?

Colder than a well-diggers belt buckle. Dad never did explain that one.

Hit the Rhod, now I feel really really old. I was stationed at FT. Benning in 1985, assigned to Drill Sergeant duty. Retired in 1992.

Ray, I'm glad you didn't say you were a Drill Sergeant at Ft. Jackson, SC in 1985. Then I might have had to look you up and had a . . . .discussion! You aren't as old as you may think, I was late in joining, 26 in fact!

A slap up side the head? YUP, and I got so paranoid about that that I lost every fight I was in until I got hit in the head. Then, unfortunately for the other guys, I went nuts and they went to their hospitals.

"Freeze the balls off a brass monkey" actually had an origin in days of pirates.

Yep, the casting used to hold cannon balls was called a "monkey" and was cast from brass. When the temps got low it would contract at a different rates than the cannon balls and they would fall off.

My mom's favorite when someone said they couldn't do something was, "can't never did anything but fall off a fence post backwards". Still don't understand it

My dad's favorite to describe a small place was, "so small you can't cuss a cat for getting a mouth full of fur". That one I understand.
