Y'all can be singular when addressing one group. Y'all are to use 'all y'all' when addressing more than one group.

I moved up north in '89. I still have my accent but it's not near as bad as it once was. When I first got here though it was like I was from a different country. I had to constantly repeat myself to people haha. Tons of little things that you don't think about when you live down south suddenly became things people up here had never heard of. When you turn on a switch and there's a bright flash then it goes dark.....you need to change the lite bub. When I'm at a restaurant and I order a sody that means a pop. Also, back home when you ordered a Coke the server would then ask "what kind?".

Negative.

If I'm at a seminar and refer to "y'all" then it'd be my immediate group or table. Much like the undefined but well recognized 'personal space,' there also exists "y'all" space. Folks outside of the undefined but recognized space would ignore the odd "y'all" tossed about.

But.....an "all y'all," that's different. Especially when spoken by someone with inherent authority or position. That's an "everyone in the room" address.

Yup, that's how it works.

Now, I don't wanna get too far out of the social norms sandbox here, but I propose your wording could have been, "but it's not near as good as it once was."

Just a thought.

The four years I lived in Abilene, TX was like living in a foreign country. They used English words but they don't mean the same thing. All my life, next Sunday would mean the Sunday immediately after the current day; in TX, it meant the second Sunday. If you meant the first Sunday from the current day, you had to say Sunday next or this Sunday.

Then there was the accent. I thought Bob War was a conflict between some guys named Robert until I found out it actually was a pointy wire fence.

it's OK for people that are not southern to say Ya'll, after having lived in the south for an appropriate amount of time. Nobody wants to hear the word"Youse"

BUT, don't ever call your father "Daddy" unless you were born in the "Real South"
