Why seniors still need newspapers
I was visiting my daughter last night when
I asked if I could borrow a newspaper.
"This is the 21st century" she said. "We don't waste money
on Newspapers. Here… use my iPad."
I can tell you this…..
That friggin fly never knew what hit him..

It's not a matter of accuracy but more of timeliness and cost of operation. After over fifty years in the media business I saw many changes, some good and some bad.
Newspapers usually go into much more detail, which people of our generation usually want. Younger people, however, want more headline and not as much depth.
Electronic media, including many newspapers who post on-line, can report as the event is happening so you don't have to wait 24 hours to get the information. Here I'd rather watch the baseball game on TV than read about it tomorrow morning or afternoon.
The cost of paper and the delivery of the product has eliminated or greatly reduced the amount of product in each edition. We use to get fifty pages and now get ten. This reduction snowballs and causes cancellations, reducing profits causing more reduction in staffing and on and on.
I miss 25 cent gasoline and 9 cents a pound chickens but we will never see that again either.
Time does not improve everything, just wine and my wife.

It's hard to pack dishes for a move with an ipad.
Old newspapers are great to read old non-headline stories that we've forgotten. They exist on the Internet, but you don't run across them accidentally.

I was remodeling a row home we were in when we first were married. I doing great - until I found they used newspaper as insulation on the outside walls! All from the 1920's. Yes, I miss newspapers I remember as a kid.

My wife does an on-line crossword every day that she's printed off. Search "Stan Newman Newsday Crossword". I don't have the web-site address handy.

FWIW I always thought it was the effect of USA Today and Gannet deciding to feed us soundbite news whether we wanted it or not.

I am all tech'd up...but I still enjoy the feel of a real newspaper...with morning coffee (Bailys of course) and a good cigar.
