But that's a little off topic.

You know you're old if ..

You know you are old when you realize old age doesn't last that long.

You know you are old when the oxygen masks drop from the ceiling when your birthday candles are lit.

You know who Lily Tomlin is and actually did the job just like that on an old Western Electric cord board for AT&T. "One ringy dingy......."

I bought an old cord board for my office and younger people coming in can't believe I worked on one of those.

My mom was an evening chief operator on a cord board. Guess that kinda makes me old. I worked on "open wire" non insulated wire on glass insulators that was carrying 8 party lines.

DW also started out on the cord board! She spent 36 years working foe SWBell and AT&T!

At her retirement party all decorations were old phones and equipment.

I left PacificnTelesis and started my own company. 30+ years later and still going strong. Scary at first as back then you "joined" and worked there till you retired. Ended up being the best decision I ever made.

Does she put up a card when she needs to go to the bathroom in the RV? She will get it....lol

I was a directory assistance operator as a summer job when I was 16. No cards but we had to put on a light and ask for a "skip out". If you skipped out too often you got a talking to.

That was at NY Telephone and the headsets must have weighed 15lbs. Back then it was unusual to have any male operators so I would get confused people and even hang ups. Guess I am old.

We were directory assistance, emergency service (pre-911) and LD operators. We were the option 0 and got it all....This was in CA and was one of the last cord boards still being used.

I know what you are talking about concerning the voice on the end. Funny conversations at time. I considered being an operator my entry point into the phone company. It worked for me.

Used to be on party lines if there was an emergency you were required to release the line so the other party could use it.

People who abused it as usual got the best end of the deal. We were not supposed to move customers that were a problem but in reality if possible they were moved to another party line, sometimes by themselves if there were enough complaints.

What was really fun was when someone left the receiver off hook and we had to go on an Easter egg hunt to make them hang it up. If there were four parties it was usually the fourth house you went to. Even more fun on and 8 party.

You know you are old when you develop an ache from something you did three days ago and can't remember what caused the ache.

(why I quit playing softball)

You know you are old when you stop growing at both ends and start growing in the middle.
