I guess I must be old, cause we sure did have a wooden phone attached to the wall. The mouthpiece was on the box and the earpiece on a cord and hung on the side on the thingy that hung up the phone.

Back in 1977 (it was not that long ago) I needed to report a auto accident out near Blyth Ca. and the gas station had the old crank phone 3 long and 3 short for the operator. And then you paid the gas station attendant for the phone call.
