I worked for 8 years as a fireman at the NC Speedway near Rockingham NC. The first 4 years we had to camp outside the track at our own expense. The last 4 years they let us camp inside in the emergency workers parking area inside the second turn for free. That was much better, because we could get up in the morning eat breakfast and walk to work.
I loved that job, it was like Heaven for a race fan who is also a Volunteer fireman. We got payed $60 a day which just payed for our trip, 200 miles each way. I was very upset at NASCAR when they took the races away from Rockingham.
I attended the first race there in 1965 and I worked the last race in 2004. It was fun while it lasted.
