St. George Island, Florida

We just returned from a 4 day trip to St. George Island, Florida which is near Apalachacola. We really enjoyed ourselves. It's totally different than what you usually think Florida is like. No Mickey Mouse, The Villages, etc. here. We stayed in the state park and paid $20 per night with water and 50 amp power. Each site had a picknick table and fire ring. We have a 38' coach and toad and had plenty of room on the site. There were nice bathroom and shower facilities. The dumping station is on the way out. The park includes a 10 mile stretch of pure white sand beach fronted by dunes. We went for a 5 mile walk one day and literally saw only two(2)other people. The town outside the park has normal small town amenities. If you like to fish or to eat fresh fish and oysters, this is the place to be. I've never seen oysters this big. They're harvested fresh each day from the bay. You can harvest up to two 5 gal buckets of oysters yourself per day if you buy a Florida fishing license and there's great surf line fishing there too.

P.S. While we were there, we visited with another couple who had great things to say about St. Joe Island, Florida. The state park campground is right on the beach at St. Joe. It's about 1 hr. west of St. George. I guess the downside is that both parks have a 14 day limit unless you're one of the park volunteers or camp host(St. George had several.) Also, there's no Wi-Fi, cell phone or land line phone access in the park. You have to go into town to get a connection on a cell phone or land line. There's Wi-Fi in the Subway sandwich shop on the main island road, but they expect you to make a food purchase to use it.

Please tell me more about this state park.
We have been to St Andrews state park in Panama Beach , FL.
It was on the bay , not far from the beach strip where all the tourist go .
If St . George is almost on the beach we would be interested in going there. Is there a web site with phone number?

MonacoMama, yes, that's the one. IMO, definitely worth a visit.

george henry, see the link above in MonacoMama's post to the St. George website. I think it'll tell you just about everything you'd want to know. It's totally different than Panama City. The whole area is much less commercial. The part of the island outside the park has many summer homes on it and a few small businesses, but no large hotels, high rise condos, bars, etc.

You had us convinced. We made plans to leave for St. George early monday AM. Checked into the size of the sites etc. Happened to think that Spring Break is going on in some areas and called the park. They had one opening for one day nest week. Next block of available time is sometime in mid April.

So now I have to look further to find sunshine, saltwater and seafood. any ideas anyone?

We stayed at St Joe,
A lovely slip of Pennisula.. gorgeous beach...but...

Be aware of the NOSEEUMS..
They ate us alive.. we looked like we had a very bad cases of chicken pox...

This is really the case in any coastal Florida area, they are very unpredictable .
We also encountered them in Crystal River.
