Nonono...In the USA under Federal Copyright Act of 1976, photographs are protected by copyright from the moment of creation! Thus holds true for written work and and other art too.
There are ways to support that protection (e.g. using copyright symbol on your shots and registering them with the Library of Congress), but they are not necessary. YOU are the copyright owner the moment you take the shot!

Not everyone cares to pursue their copyright, but they do have the right to do so. As someone who's spent alot of time in photography (on professional side too) this is something that's close to my heart.
