DW and I got back from our West Virginia excursion Tuesday evening. Had a terrific time. Highways 77 and 52 were really good roads to travel. The real adventure was traveling the 6.8 miles on a side county road to the campground. 5 one lane bridges, and switchbacks that I had to take up both lanes blind around turns. Real white knuckle road. Saturday and Sunday the weather was gorgeous, and the fall leaf color was in full glory. Monday was overcast, and we had sleet. Tuesday we woke up to snow on the ground, and it was still coming down. It was time to get out of the mountains. We stayed at the Ashland KOA. That is in McDowell County. Not your normal tourist destination. This is the heart of coal mine country up there. We went up so I could do some family genealogy research. Found a lot of information I needed. We took a tour through a coal mine in Pocohantas VA. If you ever get that thought that your job stinks, just go up there and tour that mine, and listen to how it is and was to work in them. You will never have a good excuse to complain about your job again.
For any of you out there with the toy haulers that like to go 4 wheeling, this is the place to go. What little tourist industry this area has is centered around and dedicated to 4 wheelers.
