1000 Islands Area / Summer 2016

Hello, we are planning a week long trip to the 1000 islands area of New York / Canada. We have looked at staying at the Wellesley Island State Park on the New York Side and the Ivy Lea KOA on the Canadian side.
We definitely like full service campgrounds, so the KOA sounds nice and don't mind a state park either.
So if you have stayed at either one what did you like / dislike?
While visiting the area we would like to kayak (we have our own) and bicycle. That along with some touristy attractions. WHat are the "must see and do"?
Also, we are planning this for a summer trip. July or August. Is there a week you would avoid? Example, 4th of July weekend.

Thanks for any input.

We have stayed at Association Island ( now a KOA) and Merry Knoll CG in Clayton. Both are full hookup and plenty of room for any size RV. If you are there at the end of July, the Antique Boat Show in Clayton is very interesting.

Cedar Point St Park in Clayton is GREAT!, they have some full hookup sites that over look the St Lawrence. WE go with our 43 foot Class and stay in site 10, not full hook up but the site is great and the view fantastic.

A short drive into Gananoque from Ivy Lea and a cruise through the Thousand Islands including Boldt Castle. Gananoque also has a casino.

We booked Wellesley Island State Park (Fox Loop) for a week in July. We figured it would be easier to stay on the US side since we have the refrigerator packed with food when we travel along with dogs and their food. We will visit the Canadian side and take a bicycle ride and take in the sights for a day or so.
Visiting Boldt Castle will be on the top of our list to visit.

Thanks again and if you have a must visit please let us know.

If you like old boats, try the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton. Some of the prettiest wooden boats you'll ever see.

On our side, we stay at the KOA in Mallorytown. FHU, WIFI but no cable.

If you stay on our side first, it might be a little out of your way (about an hour or so), but I would to go Massena International Kampground in Massena, NY on the US side after. While on our side, before you go back, score yourself some Canadian funds, Massena kampground accepts Canadian at par when paying cash. They have FHU with wifi, if you're close enough to the office, and cable at $36/night ($39 for 50A), even better if you're paying with Canadian cash, and no tax.

Just stayed at Wellesley Island this past weekend, fox loop has been updated with nice drainage and paved sites. New camp store and playgrounds. Very nice state park.
