1000 Islands/Association Island Henderson New York

Anybody ever been to the KOA in Henderson, New York. We are planning a trip since we have heard good things about it. What about sightseeing in the area. Any suggestions. Thanks.

Been there YEARS ago, one thing the wind will always be blowing being as you're at the east end of lake Ontario. Head up to Clayton NY to the Antique Boat Museum there, a lot of real interesting boats. Take the 1000 Island cruse out of Alexander Bay also, do it early in the day so you have time to tour Bolt Castle, and the Boat House that's across the river that he built also. Also several good wineries up in the area there too.

We're heading to the KOA tomorrow for three nights! If the internet works (we take nothing for granted...) we'll be posting a review on RVparkreviews dot com. Then we leave for a few weeks in Canada where I don't expect to be checking in here.

Wellesley Island State Park looks interesting. We are thinking of giving that one a try this summer. It is just under the Thousand Island bridge that links Canada and the US. Easy access to tours to Bolt Castle.

If you are coming to Canada, you can access the internet free from McDonalds ,Tim Hortons, and Starbucks. Some campgrounds also have internet access.

That's exactly what we did about 4 yrs ago. - Association Island is a bit aways from everything, but it's a nice place.

We are here at KOA 1000 Islands at Association Island now--arrived yesterday. Thought I'd pop in to give you our impression so far. Nice park, suits us fine. We are in site L30, a deluxe lake-view pull-in site. It's partially obstructed by a fifth wheel in front of us in a premium lake front site. ;-) They have lots of classifications of sites here.

Our site is level, open to the sky for satellite TV like we requested, and partly gravel/partly grassy as are most of the sites here. This place is huge, with lots of room for big rigs. The views of the lake are wonderful--we really enjoyed the sunset yesterday.

Sure, it's windy off the lake. There are *zero* mosquitoes here! There are some mayflies--no big deal, tho. The park seems pretty full, but very quiet.

Yesterday we took a ride to look at nearby Stony Point Lighthouse. It's privately owned now, so all you can do is look at it from the road, but google it. It has an amazing history!

Association island. We will arrive on Wednesday and we are in site E4. Sounds like a really nice place. Some have suggested the castle and also the boat museum.

We stayed at Association Island a couple years ago. Nice place and the only "complaint" we had was the stench of the rotting sea weed along the shoreline. It smelled just like sewage. Not bad at our site, but quite strong when you first pull in to register. We almost turned around.

Boldt Castle is a definite "must see". The history and story that goes with it are amazing, as is the restoration of the castle that is likely still ongoing. They are doing a beautiful job!!

We stayed at Association Island this past weekend for the 5 days around July 4th. My main impression after our stay is that the park needs a lot of maintenance. We were on site H25 a premium lake front lot. The wind didn't stop blowing all weekend. Sometimes it was so bad, we had to eat inside the mh. There was a large broken branch from a huge tree hanging very high up over our picnic table, which we didn't notice until Sunday afternoon... After being there since Thursday. We immediately went to the office and asked to have the branch taken down as it was very close to falling. We were told there was a wedding at the clubhouse and that nobody was available to help us... We went back to our site, moved the table, and not 10 minutes later the branch (6" to 8" diameter and about 16 ft long) fell we were seated. We could have been seriously hurt if wee were sitting there when it fell. About an hour later the manager (Paul) came by in a golf cart. He was very apologetic, but that was it. I didn't think the park was worth the nightly fee or that the staff was helpful... So we will never go back. There are several other parks nearby that were very nice and right on the water.

Two things I would highly recommend you do while in the area is get ice cream at the Trolly ice cream stand and to visit Alex Bay. It's about an hour ride from Association Island. Take the Uncle Sam millionaire row tour. The last stop is Boldt Castle. Very worth the $24 pp cost. For the castle and boat ride.

Some return, some don't

The sunsets are wonderful, this was taken at our site right in front of our Coach, it was a pull in site, so the view out the windshield was wonderful. It was June, there was a hatch of some kind of flying critter! They were all over everything, could not avoid keeping out of the Coach, had to vacuum the ceiling every night As you can see, we had very little wind, but when it did blow, the bugs were gone, when it quit blowing, they were back, they covered the entire Coach , I just hit it at a bad time. The resort could use a lot of work, I am thinking he just joined the KOA network 2 years ago. Hang on to your hat if a storm come across the lake, one hit when I was there, Coast Guard reported the winds at the Island at 63 mph, shook the Coach on its jacks! I was on L-21. A hour or so down the road is the Villages at Turning Stone.....5 star resort! Just another one to check out in the area.

Bad thunderstorm here yesterday with lots of rain. It left this place with lots and lots of standing water. After the storm was gone and people were walking their dogs, the power failed. This was maybe 5pm. I called the office and left a message in case it was isolated to our area of the campground. Power was restored close to midnight. No return call from the office. We have a lot of solar and a genny, so we were okay, but most of our neighbors had neither. I don't know if any of this is a common occurrence. Still quite a bit of standing water this morning--we're leaving for Canada.

We went to Sacket's Harbor yesterday. Got our dog groomed (we're fulltimers) and had a wonderful breakfast at Pin Tan Galley. Great town full of historical buildings, one of which happens to be a microbrewery!

Left 1000 island KOA on Sunday. The location is beautiful. The sunset magnificent and the local tourist sites outstanding. The st Lawrence river and Lake Ontario have much to offer.
My only complaint was the bugs at the campground. There were swarms all around and you couldn't keep them out of the motor home. The camp ground has it's own marina, so if boating is also an interest this is the right spot. The campground has an interesting history as a retreat for GE workers. I would certainly go back.
