If you like fly fishing, the lower Dolores below McPhee Reservoir and near Cortez is a great tailwater river. There are some nice looking camp spots in there. I've also fished the freestone Upper Dolores as well.

There are so many great places to visit in Colorado. Among our favorites is Breckenridge. Lots to do in the Summer. We also love the Tiger Run RV resort there. This is among our top 5 RV resorts anywhere.

You've got me thinking about this resort as it would be an opportunity to do laundry, clean the trailer, etc. The wife and kids would probably also enjoy a glamping experience sandwiched in there.
The only way this would make sense though would be to steal one day from RMNP and one day from Great Sand Dunes NP.
This would mean:
from 5 full days in RMNP to 4 full days
and
from 2 full days in GSDNP to 1 full day.
Having been to neither, what are people's thoughts?

Steal the day from RMNP and do Buena Vista in place of Salida/GSDNP and Breck.
You have a town can enjoy more of the Colorado you've seen Pictures of - GSDNP is a drive by - get out get hot - burn your feet - get in the car, head up the road, get in the Water, Smile! Buena Vista, while not a National Park, is Still just a few minutes from Wild and Beautiful in the Collegiates.
Breck is .............Breck. Sorry Love it but it's not the Colorado people drive for days to SEE!

If you end up with any high mountain stays be sure to bring your southern CA winter jackets. We have always used ours on our RV trips in July when the sun goes down. In fact we just keep them the RV all summer long because it is easy to forget to pack them when you are leaving Denver in 100 degree weather.
Also make sure your RV house batteries are in good shape. Ours can run the furnace all night for several days. Sometimes we put a small solar panel out to boost them during the day. Usually plenty of sunshine.
So many good places to stay that I don't even know where to start.
We always love Great Sand Dunes. For me there is something especially peaceful there.

Don't forget to hike Zapata Falls while there.

You also mentioned Rocky Mountain National Park. We liked Old Fall River Road but have to confess that we haven't been there except the one time so don't know the park well.

You mentioned entering CO near the CO National Monument.

Not sure what else is on your radar. There are so many good places that it isn't possible to list them all. I think the kids would like activities like white water rafting, gold mining tours with panning for gold, alpine slides, zip lining, hot springs pools, horse back riding, mountain biking etc. of which there are tons to choose from so I would tend to plan stops around those and then see the scenic and natural wonders in between and on the way. Breckenridge can be a good launching point for alot of the activities because the ski resorts have things like the alpine slides, using the ski lifts to take you and your mountain bike up so you can ride down, and organized activities like horseback riding.
Don't forget to stop at the top of the mountain passes in the rest area and take in the view. So many race to see the view in RMNP but forget that equally stunning views are available all along the way.
As you start to lock down a route I'm sure people can suggest the gems along that route.

Amazing! 10-15 years ago we chose a national forest campground on the lower Dolores below the dam as our July 4 weekend spot. We got there a few days before the holiday and found an awesome spot. Trouble was.... that river was about dry a couple years previously and fishing hadn't come back yet. Folks probably knew about that.
We had the whole campground to ourselves for the whole July 4 weekend. Tried lots of fishing but nothing.

I appreciate all the ideas! We are booked for RMNP already, so some of the suggestions just won't fit our itinerary, but I'm definitely rethinking GSDNP...

Yes, I have read about the history. Like most rivers in the west, politics and drought played a role. They have supposedly recognized the importance of maintaining a more consistent flow rate for both trout conservation and agriculture.

How true that is.
BUT the OP said -
"We have 3 kids (8, 10, 12) and enjoy hiking, moderate off roading, fishing...anything active. We prefer National/State parks, and BLM is good as well. The further from crowds/urban areas the better. Prefer the cool of the mountains in the summer."
Just trying to be part of the solution...............
Don't get me wrong - I've driven to Breck had a bowl of Chili and driven back, more than once.
Beautiful Drive - Great Place to Ski (If you enjoy Crowds) - Close - Not the most Expensive - Many, many great reasons to Live or Visit.
BUT if the mission is to avoid crowds/urban areas then...........maybe not so much.......
