3 Weeks in NM or AZ....What Would You Do?

We will arrive in Albuquerque on 10-6 to pick up a new-to-us 2015 5th wheel. Plan to spend 2 days doing checkout & getting supplies. Should leave around 10-8 but don't need to be back in N. Florida until around 11-6. With 1 week allotted to drive to FL, that gives us 3 weeks to do what ever we want. We have toured CO but have seen very little of NM or AZ.

We are outdoor folks, love nature, hiking, white water rafting and HATE shopping/big cities. What/where would you explore during those 3 weeks?

If you are picking up a new rig and planning to stay in a nearby RV park for a couple of days....I hope you have already made reservations for your stay. The Balloon Festival starts on Oct. 6, and runs thru the 14th.

Have reservation in a hotel for 2 nights then head out of town.

too bad. In or near ALB:

- Sandia Peak tram
- 3 Sisters Volcanoes
- Sky City
- Petroglyph Natl Monument

you could head south

- Trinity Monument near Socorro,NM
- Very Large Array also *near* Socorro, NM
- White Sands missle test area
- UFO museum, Roswell NM
- Tombstone and Bisbee AZ
- Karchner Caverns SP, AZ

NM is full of good camping, they have excellent State Parks too. There is Carlsbad Caverns, White Sands (not sure if there is a cg) to the south. Maybe on your return trip. Along with City of Rocks State Park near Silver City. Gila Cliffs Nat. Mon. is in that area. Further South in Texas is Big Bend NP and October is a good time to visit there.

But close by http://www.emnrd.state.nm.us/SPD/fentonlakestatepark.html

Fenton Lake SP might be good, not too far from the dealer if a problem crops up but not too close to the city. Anything close will be packed with the festival.

To the East is Palo Duro SP (TX) just south of Amarillo. A rarely visited Albiades Flint Quarry NM north of Amarillo, Cooper Breaks and Caprock State Parks to the east.

To the north of Albuquerque is Taos Pueblo and there are other Pueblos to the west I believe. Also west is Malpais NM and into AZ is Painted Rock, Petrified Forest, Capulin and Walnut Canyon. With the Meteor Crater.

This list could go on for pages. As for Karchner you have to have reservations to get in and I don't know how difficult they are to get. It's on my too-do list. The four states-NM, AZ, CO and UT are campers paradise.

I would suggest Santa Fe, but with the Balloon Festival in ABQ, most parks in SF will be booked solid for the week plus likely sometime after, too.

Can't help with NM but for AZ that is easy. Come to Sedona. It is perfect for what you are looking for and October is an ideal time to be here. We don't have the white-water rafting, but about everything else. See if you can get a spot in Rancho Sedona RV Park.

If you have never seen the Grand Canyon, I would recommend you go there. Its six hours drive for Albuquerque. From there you could go to Page to see the slot canyons, Glen Canyon Dam, horseshoe corner, and Lake Powell. On your way to the canyon on I40, check out Barringer Crater, Painted Desert NP, Petrified Forest NP. Take a day trip in your truck to Sedona. Very pretty place. Go south from there through Phoenix, and check out Carlsbad Caverns, Tombstone, Karchner Caverns on your way back across I 10 east. If you are going to do this, buying a National Park Pass is generally worth it. Its good for a year.

There's full hook-up campgrounds nearby.

Monument Valley is not too far from Page Arizona. We went there from Page when we were there. We only had a very low car, and they didn't recommend we drive around the 14 mile loop through the valley. You don't need 4x4, but something with 6 or 8 inches of clearance would do it. My car only has about 4 inches. Most of the John Wayne westerns were filmed here. You will recognize the buttes right away. Cheers.

Hate to admit it publicly, but Albuquerque is rampant with vehicle and petty theft. Be sure to secure your stuff well. Older F250's and F350's unattended in public parking areas are targeted especially.

In early November 2017, we stayed at the Tucumcari KOA for a night on our way home to TN. The owner said they get booked up solid early for the balloon festival and it's 180 miles east of Albuquerque. So plan ahead.

Stay in New Mexico at Cochiti Corp of Engineer park and tour Kasha-Katuwe Nat'l Monument (Tent Rocks) - very unique hiking. It's an easy day trip into Santa Fe.

Tour Los Alamos and Bandelier Nat'l Monument off Hwy 84 from Cochiti.

Drive north on 84 to the painter, Georgia O'Keefe's, roaming grounds. Stay at Abiquiqu Lake Corp of Engineer park.

Continue north on 84 to Chama; take the train tour - might be nice Fall colors.

Continue north on 84 to Pagosa Springs, CO - nice hiking, kayaking and spend a few hours soaking in the awesome hot springs overlooking the river. Many immaculate pools of varying temperatures. We pack a cooler with drinks and sandwiches and just move from pool to pool spending a morning. So relaxing.

Backtrack on 84 into New Mexico again and pick up 64 east taking you to Taos. The Enchanted Circle drive is very nice from Taos up to Red River and Eagle Nest.

From Eagle Nest you could head east to Florida.
