Gonna leave next week and want to travel from Gallup, NM to Durango, CO.
On the way we would like to go to 4 corners. There does seem to be a road (hwy 597?) to the area but is it RV friendly? If not is there somewhere close that we can unhook and take the toad?

thanks

We were at the 4 Corners monument a couple weeks ago in our 40-foot with Jeep toad. It's highway into the monument and the RV parking is on dirt.

The Navajo's charge a few bucks to enter the area and once inside they have several booths where they sell jewelry.

Was there in 2001 with a 29-foot Class C pulling a van on a tow dolly. My son still talks about how he tripped in Utah and landed in New Mexico!

I would not worry about the size of your rig, it is good paved highway to the turn off. Although in the 9 years I lived in the area I never paid to go in. http://www.deseretnews.com/article/7...miles-off.html And now it has moved!

Paul:

In the late-1950s and into the mid-1960s I lived in Page, where my dad was working on the cooling system for the Glen Canyon Dam. There wasn't much to do (no lake or bridge to Utah early on) so we would explore the area. I don't, however, recall visiting the marker. Anyone visiting that general area should consider a visit to the dam and take the tour down to the turbines and diversion penstock. It's amazing to think anyone would have conceived of building a dam in the middle of that canyon.

Way off topic trivia question...

Who threw the switch to detonate the first explosion to excavate the canyon wall and where was he when the switch was thrown?

Glen Canyon Dam is a dam on the Colorado River at Page, Arizona, USA, operated by the United States Bureau of Reclamation. The purpose of the dam is to provide water storage for the arid southwestern United States, and to generate electricity for the region's growing population....
began with a demolition blast keyed by the push of a button by President
Dwight D. Eisenhower

As I recall, Ike wasn't at his desk, but flying over the canyon in a Presidental jet and pushed a button to trigger the detonation.

It looks like at some point in the future, the dam will be deactivated to allow the Colorado to flow again.

I sure hope all those people in AZ are not still counting on that water.

How about they just let it fill then become a water fall? Have a friend that is navajo and was a ranger at the dam (She gave the daily dam tour) and was in the vistor center when it almost top the dam in 1983.
