5 Overnite Stops on I 10 White Springs FL to Yuma AZ

We will be travelling from White Springs FL to Yuma AZ starting about Tuesday AM January 19, 9am expecting to travel 350 milrs each day with a maximum of 400 mi per day.

Using Mapquest the following areas would give us the time and distance we would travel each day and then require a place to overnite:

White Springs to Mobile AL 5 hrs 338 mi
Mobile AL Beaumont TX 5 hrs 381 mi
Beaumont TX to Kerville TX 5 1/2 hrs 345 mi
Kerville TX to Van Horn TX 5 ¾ hrs 370 mi
Van Horn TX to Wilcox AZ or Bowie AZ 5 ½ hrs 355 mi (Tuscon would be nice but 6 hrs and 438 mile is probably too ambitious)
Bowie AZ to Yuma AZ 5 1/3 Hrs 344 Mi

So the nites on the road are (1) Mobile, (2) Beaumont, (3) Kerrville, (4) Van Horn,
(5) Wilcox or Bowie, arriving in Yuma AZ for the 6th nite

These are approximations and the Mapquest times are probably driving the posted limit wheras I will be driving 60mph with a dolly in tow.

We have the Next Exit and Exit Now books and I will look up the exit numbers of these areas in each state but would appreciate any suggestions for these areas.

I do not mind staying at Walmart (if RV friendly), Flying J/Pilot or T of A but do not mind paying overnite fees at KOA or other RV parks. A casino stop would be nice to avail ourselves of the buffet (we do not gamble as being on the Interstate is risk enough for me J)

This is our first time to AZ as we have taken the easy way and gone to Florida previous 9 years. From home in North Carolina – South Carolina, White Springs and then Central Florida.

Seems like you are counting on averaging 65 to 75 MPH on these legs. No breaks? Not accounting for traffic? Does this match your past driving averages over the years?

I usually plan on averaging 55 MPH over long trips to make up for stops and traffic.

We have stayed at the KOA in Van Horn, nothing fancy but clean and level. They also had a restaurant in site.

I have also stayed at that KOA in Van Horn several times. It is decent with some very long sites for those that want to stay hiched up. For a bail out plan, Hilltop RV in Ft Stockton is very doable as well. Cochise Terrace in Benson, AZ is another we have frequented. We have made a lot of trips up the I-10 corridor the last 5 years. Going again in March-April.

There's no need to make reservations at these places because folks just stop for one night usually. They're not destination places.

So, if you happen to get off-schedule and find yourself needing to stop elsewhere, Deming, NM just beyond Las Cruces has many RV parks. Then a next good stop would be Benson, AZ where Cochise Terrace or Butterfield RV would be good parks. There's nothing in Bowie, AZ worth a stop.

We stayed there for one night just a month ago. It is no longer a KOA but is renamed as Van Horn RV Park. We had great views of the mountains. We had an end site on the east end of the park so there was nothing beside us to the east clear to the mountains. Nice long site with some cute landscaping.

Ate at their on-site restaurant and it was pretty good. Very friendly, helpful staff. It's about a half mile from the interstate so the noise wasn't noticeable. No nearby train tracks. At that time, they had plenty of spaces available.

Benson, AZ;
Nicest "governmental" park we've ever stayed at is Kerchner SP - 9 miles south of I10

This is our first time to AZ as we have taken the easy way and gone to Florida previous 9 years. From home in North Carolina – South Carolina, White Springs and then Central Florida.
We're planning a very similar trip leaving in Feb headed out from the NE Florida area to Sierra Vista, AZ. The great-grandson graduates from his Army training in Feb.
The trip out will be pretty much a "get there but don't push it" plan but the return will be with the daughter and SIL so we'll stop at a few places to see the sights.
I normally plan RV trips for an overall average of 45 to 50 MPH and go for about 8 hours a day. Our rough plan will be to use rest areas, truck stops, or RV friendly stores for a couple of nights and stay at an RV park on the 3rd. That's not set in stone because weather and traffic can force changes.
FWIW I used to fly 12 ~ 14 hour patrols while in the Navy and drove commercial OTR for a couple of years so I see an 8 hour day as relatively short.
There are nice welcome centers that we've used before entering Alabama and Mississippi and Fly Js along the route. I don't make park reservations because I'm not sure of our exact timeline. I call mid morning to try for a spot when we have a better idea of our timeline.
I initially planned for 5 days but changed to 6 because we're in a, new to us, 2012 Bounder 35K with 11K miles on it. I admit to being a little nervous about a 4000 mile maiden trip but I've spent several weeks around and under the coach and all seems good. We've traveled to the mid-Texas area a few times for family visits but haven't driven I-10 west of San Antonio in many years. I remember some decent uphill grades so a 50 MPH average might be a little ambitious.
I hope your trip goes well and look forward to your report/s when you have the time. I'll try to do the same for ours.

We had a pretty bad time with winds when we went thru some of that area back in 2013. Couple of times we stayed put until things calmed down. Twice we left & they came up very unexpectedly. Fort Stockton to Junction was really bad. Keep an eye on the weather & be prepared to alter your plans accordingly.

Do you remember what time of year that was?

Thanks for all the tips and advice.

The resources in this forum are beyond priceless.

I was looking at our diary/log for our Yellowstone trip in the fall of '13 and we were on the road by 8:30am ( our Lab likes to go out about 7:00am and I cannot sleep thru her 'talking' in the am and off the road by 4:30pm and our segments were about the same except for 1 day 406mi.

In any event our itinerary is not cast in stone so we can stop/stay as long as we want or need.

Thanks again for the help/advice.

We are ready to depart after breakfast tomorrow.

Good luck on your travels and have a safe trip! I'm going from FL to AZ as well at the end of the month so it was interesting to see the replies to your question.
