We stayed there in '09. We used Hadley's Point Campground as our base. Here's the link if you are interested. Hadley's Point Campground Bar Harbor

The overall area is not all that big, so you are not really very far from most points of interest or the downtown area. Depending when you go traffic can be heavy during the peak season. We we there in June and it was not too bad. After Labor Day is supposed to be good also.

Remember, there are two ways to get there from the south. Even though Rt# 1 looks the better route. Don't under estimate going up to Bangor via Rt# 95 and then down through Elsworth, especially from Memorial day through Labor day. Just a suggestion from a local.
