Pulled in to Aces High Campground in East Lyme, CT at 1:30 pm with reservations made a few weeks ago (6 nights, almost $300 paid in advance). Had to wait about five minutes for the check-in person to get off the phone. Then she informs us that we're early (check-in is 3 pm) and she wants to collect another $3 from us ($2 per hr) to get to our site.

Now I get that coming in before noon might be pushing the issue, but this campground has had the use of our full advance payment for several weeks. The pool is closed for the next two days for cleaning (no credit for that). I understand the campground has expenses, but clearly they exhibit a lesser degree of common sense when it comes to customer service.

Perhaps they got a hint from the airlines industry on collecting extra money. To date I have never paid everything up front, just the first night. If the RV parks want the full amount I decline and ask for the names of other RV parks in the area. One desk clerk just hung up on me, but most will give a name or two. Hey, I'm the buyer, it's my money, if I'm not happy with the deal I walk.

That's terrible. I sure hope it was a poorly trained employee or work camper and not the owner.

I find that the early arrival fees are a common thing.....at least wherever I camp in the Northeast.....they figure for an extra $6 or so, it's worth it to pay rather than leave and come back.....some charge as much as $5 per hour.....and don't forget the $4 "Resort Fee"....and if you have a pet, another $4 per night.....junk fees

I think that my response would be to park it in the entrance and tell them that 'I'll wait'.

We have been to Aces High several times and I am not surprised! They think that they have a gold plated campground there.

Being a little bullheaded, that's exactly what we did!
