Adirondacks and Vermont in late June

My wife and I are planning a trip to New England and New York in June/July. All of our arrangements have been made except for the beginning of the trip which will include the Adirondack/Lake Champlain region of NY and then Vermont. We've allocated 6 days for these areas. I'm trying to decide on what general area to camp and for what duration. We definitely want to take in the Lake Placid/Saranac areas, Lake Champlain and islands, northern Vermont (probably Stowe area). I tentatively want to camp 2 days each at Lake Placid area, Lake Champlain (either NY or VT side), and Stowe area; but may be too much changing campsites and loss of time moving. Or spend 3 days in each of two locations. Please help me decide. A lot will depend on travel times; and I have no idea as to local traffic/road conditions. You may also give me "must-see" sites. We like sight-seeing, light hiking, flatwater kayaking (we will bring our kayaks). Thanks in advance.

If you are doing the trip I think you are then try Apple Island Resort on N Hero Island:

https://www.appleislandresort.com/

The last I checked they were PA.

For Placid & Saranac it depends on what you want. The closest full service is probably the KOA in Wilmington. There is a state campground between Saranac Lake and Lake Placid but no hookups.

Places to see, I'd do a night at Thornbush Acres in Indian Lake and spend a day at the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake. I'd also look at the Natural History Museum in Tupper Lake. Different focus for the two museums, both well worth a visit. I'd also try to see a ship going through the Soo locks at Massena on the way between NY and VT. VT is small enough that you can do a lot of it from any one place. It depends on what you want.

You might want to do a little research into black flies in the Adirondacks. Many years ago I took a group backpacking in the Adirondack wilderness area in mid-June and we were tortured by the black flies. They are tiny and you don't feel them bite, but they sure do! We hiked to the top of Mt. Marcy anticipating we'd be above the flies, but no joy. A beautiful area, but I'd never return in June when the black flies are at their peak.

The traditional end of the black fly season is the fourth of July. Reality is that I'd think about a back country trip in June. Mostly I'd take precautions. I don't see it as so much of a problem in the Museums and Villages. They do use various control methods around those places. It all depends what you want to do.

Ok, we have reservations at North Pole 100-acre Wood CG in Wilmington, NY for 3 nights. Now I need to fill in 3 nights in Vermont; thinking now maybe along Lake Champlain or east or south of Stowe; not much around Stowe in the way of CG's. This will be a 32 day trip through eastern NY, VT, NH, ME, MA, RI, CT and back home to Alabama.

Black flies will still be prevalent and so will the mud, unless it gets dry early this year. However, your dates are near the end of those nasty's so it might be OK. If you could wait a week, it might be more enjoyable. Have fun in any case.

Apple Island resort is a favorite of ours, right on Champlain,North Beach CG is a city campground in Burlington right on the bike trail( if you dont ride be sure to take a walk on the causeway across Mallets bay),our go to around stowe is Elmore State CG. It has no hook ups but has nice sites,is on Lake Elmore, has hiking trails and is 20+ minutes from Stowe and 40 minutes from Ben and Jerry's
We haven't stayed at the two CGs in the area Gold Brook and Mountain View. just seemed a little close to the highway for us

In Stowe there is a nice little campground called Gold Brook. Right near the Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Factory Tour and the city of Stowe's bike path.
