Advice on a trip to the keys
Taking the family on a 3 week trip from md to key west and I am looking for some camping recommendations. We are going to try to stay in two spots in the keys for 3-4 days each. Would like a waterfront place with room for a 38 ft class a . I am just looking for some feed back from seasoned members that have spent time down there. Thanks in advance!

It's hard to beat Bluewater Key. It's the only place we've stayed down there, so I can't offer much else in the way of recommendations.

Bluewater VERY pricey at $100+ a night but it's gorgeous.
Do you have military benefits?

Try Curry Hammock State Park, it's outside of Marathon. Only 28 sites, about half of them are waterfront. Very difficult to get a reservation, but look for cancellations. All large sites that will fit your MH without an issue.
Another good spot is Big Pine Key Fishing Lodge ... as long as you don't have dogs. The Key deer roam thru the park , hence the restriction on dogs. Blue Water , as mentioned is very nice... and pricey, but worth it. . Boyd's on Stock Island is right next to KW, and is also pretty expensive, but it's as close to KW as you will get without being military. Another option, about 11 miles from KW is Geiger Key Marina. A bit off the beaten path, but pretty interesting. Onsite bar/restaurant has good BBQ on the weekends.
When are you planning to visit ? ... we may be cancelling our visit to Curry Hammock ( or reducing it) due to a later than expected delivery date on our new coach.

Hi Eddies26,
Consider Sunshine Key. It is at MM 39. There are many activities north and south of the RV resort. Go to http://www.rvonthego.com/Sunshine-Key-RV-Resort.html for more information. If you go, consider a standard site. They are considerably cheaper per night. The "water front" sites, for me, are not worth the $s.

A stay in Marathon is a good choice, you can get to all areas in the keys in an easy day drive, less congestion as compared to Key West.
Jolly Roger is an older park, but not that bad and have sites on the water, try for the newer pull in sites by the dock area. Boat ramp available and nice private pier area. New pool since we were there in '10. Few patios most all sites on sand/grass. Lots of old trees, not much new...basic old Florida as we call it, but that ain't all that bad.
Grassy Key Rv Park is also nice, all gravel and little landscaping (just a bit barren) when we were there, but on the water and newly renovated.
Other choices, visit Top 5 RV Parks in Marathon, Florida - Yahoo! Voices - voices.yahoo.com for more options.

Some of the snowbirds start to leave in March. I'd suggest getting on the FL State Parks website and hope for some cancellations. Starting at the North you have John Pennekamp, Long Key, Curry Hammock and Bahia Honda. All very nice parks and many roomy sites and the price is hard to beat. If you have an open checkbook, you can't do worse than Blue Water Key, IMHO.
