I sounds like you are entering via hwy. 212 (the Beartooth hwy). You will pass numerous National Forest camp grounds along the way.
The two closest to the park, Soda Butte and Colter, are both within 2 miles of Cooke City, Montana. A few miles farther (in Wyoming) are Fox Creek and Crazy Creek.
Fox Creek has electric hookups. The other three have no hookups.
There are also several N.F. camp grounds just west of West Yellowstone, but I am less familiar with them.
See Campground Directory and National Forest Campgrounds.

We've got reservations at Colter Bay and Grizzly for July as well.
If you're going to Black Hills I suggest seeing Mt Rushmore before Crazy Horse. Also take a drive around the wildlife loop in Custer State Park. I had no car last timeand did it on a rented scooter. Man, those bison are impressive when you don't have a steel cage surrounding you

Start with u will enjoy Yellowstone, take your time lots to c, we have been twice & stayed @ Grizzly in West Yellowstone Mont. easy in to park & some civilization ( restaurants grocery etc). We stayed in 45'mh, many of the other parks don't have room for large units. Have fun & take warm clothing we had snow in June one of our trips.

We were there last July and stayed at Grizzly in West Yellowstone. Great park and very convienent to the park. We spent three days touring the park in our toad then drove thru with our MH and out the east gate into Cody. Spent several days there. Be sure to go to the Bufflow Bill Museum. Will take two days to completely tour the Museum as there is much to see. Also recommend the rodeo. lots of fun. You will have a great time so relax and enjoy

If going to Rushmore, make sure you avoid Sturgis by at least a week. There's a nice state Park just west of Cody on the lakeshore. We really enjoyed Gros Ventre in Jackson Hole.

How was the drive out the East entrance? We have been told the road is too tight and winding for a large MH so we always head North and take 90 through Bozeman and head down to West Yellowstone. Coming in through Cody and the East entrance would save miles and introduce us to some new scenery.

From Cody the east entrance was very doable with our 40' motorhome. It's not any narrower than a regular 2-lane road anywhere. We got to Cody via coming from Buffalo on Hwy 16 to Worland and north to Greybull and west to Cody.

I also wondered if we dare go through the East entrance with our 40' diesel pulling a toad to get to the west entrance (Grizzly)??? Or should we head north and go around??

We did exactly this last summer (go thru east entrance to Grizzly) and are going to do it again this July. Didn't have a problem.

We liked Rush-No-More cg not far east of Sturgis. Easy access from I-90 but quiet because hills are between the cg and the interstate. Grassy, FHU, pool and nice people.
The Sturgis Bike Week this year is August 3-9.

Going from the east entrance to West Yellowstone, there are two routes to choose from. When you get to the Fishing Bridge junction, you can turn north past Canyon, Norris, and Madison. Alternately, you can turn south past Bridge Bay, West Thumb, Old Faithful, and Madison. The northern route will be a little shorter, and you will encounter more bison. IMO, the southern route is more scenic. The northern route, though shorter, may actually take longer. It tends to get some significant bison jams.
Whichever you choose, you should have no problems driving your rig across it.

Here's a link to the Yellowstone site. Be sure to check for an update before your travels through the park for road construction or any closures. There are always some each year. Summer is the only time they can do this.
