Jim,

If it were me I would stay at the Lethbridge Casino parking lot.

I have stayed in various free places all over the North American Continent. Casinos are just one of those many that I choose along the way.

I asked for a "low" cost spot. If I told my wife were stopping at A casino it's gon-a cost me....$$$

Good intell...

Looks like it's just off the freeway. Any restrictions ? such as parking at a certain area of the lot. In the Google Street View I see RV's parked on the east side of the parking lot.

Actually we have never stayed there. We did stay in the rear parking lot of a Motel 6 located up the road a piece in a small town called Claresholm on highway 2. It was nice and quiet with free Wi-Fi to boot. That was on our second trip to Alaska back in 2012.

Personally if you're looking for free try a Flying J or Casino.
Or these campgrounds are in the area, there are Walmarts in the area but some don't allow over nighting I think it is a Municipal issue.

Transplanted in Alaska

Hey I'm just starting full timing it here in AK but I've lived up here for 4 years now. I'll be down in Kenai for most of July for dipnetting season. Out towards Denali in June. All over in August. Anyone need tips on stuff to do? Can I suggest you pick up the northern lights coupon book? It's got some great activity coupons in it. Or if you don't want to spend money on it, I would be happy to see if I have any coupons I'm not using in mine.

I did the alcan in January 4 years ago solo as a female in my 20s. I'm sure it's different in the summer with more people around but I had a few instances that made me more than a little nervous. Safe travels!

It was 85 yesterday here in Palmer, AK and today it's maybe 50 degrees. Just a heads up, our bear population woke up way too early and they are getting a little more aggressive than normal. Also, we have some wolves getting closer to town than makes some of us comfortable. Keep your eyes open. Safe travels guys!

Hi,
My partner and I are full-timers. We are in Anchorage for the summer. My partner is working part-time at REI. We would love to learn to fish while we are here.

The great thing about when the salmon are running, you're no longer fishing...you're catching.

Too late?

Lots of great info in this thread....made me realize how under-prepared I am for the trip ahead.

The wife and I are just about to head out on our "Find a new home" journey. We'll be departing the CA Bay Area the first week of June and working our way up the Coast into Alaska then back down and around to the East Coast, Florida and down along the bottom working our way back to CA.

It was mentioned in this thread that it's too late to be heading up to Alaska...Having never driven there(visited a few times via ship) I'm curious what to expect if we don't get up there until say...first or second week of July. Our initial thought was to make it as far as Fairbanks.

Thank you

Each salmon species requires a different technique and that technique varies depending on which river or inlet you're fishing in. Go down behind the Ulu Factory at Ship Creek and talk to local anglers. Watch and learn or get a float trip on any salmon river. They'll get you fish, but most importantly, you're getting a fishing lesson.

It is not too late to drive to Alaska. We did not depart Indiana until just before Memorial Day in 2014 and spent 58 nights in Alaska. Was it enough time, no. But we are planning a return trip in 2017 and love it so much, we may move there.

Yeah, getting infected with Alaska fever is incurable. We went up in 2006 for the trip of a lifetime, --- then went back in 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, and are looking to 2017. In 2011 we flew up for two weeks to see the Iditerod. If medical services were better I'd move up there tomorrow, but the years are beginning to tell and it's just no longer possible. Funny how you never see the bug that gives you the fever.

I'll have to look further into that one. Does it come with a Riverboat Discovery coupon (Fairbanks). I'll take it if it's available. Did that tour the first time we visited sis-n-law maybe 18 years ago, would like to do it again.

We'll be starting our "slow" trek north in about 10 days. taking 26 days to make it to my sis-n-laws in North Pole by mid to late June. We'll boondock in her drive for a few weeks, we have reservations in Denali for mid-July. After that we'll head down to Valdez and Seward & Homer. Can you tell me the dates / season for Dip netting in the Kenai area? I'll have to avoid that time, unless by brother-n-law has plans to.

Another ? I'm interested in trying my hand at gold panning. I bought some equipment, including a 50" river sluice, assortment of pans and classifiers I know of one public gold panning just north of Fairbanks "Felix Pedro's Discovery Claim" Any others near Fairbanks? or heading south down the Richardson towards Valdez?
