We noticed that the Yukon had little cell service, not even 911 services (in 2014).

We really didn't rely on cell service until we were around the bigger towns in Alaska and we didn't miss it. We just told the kids we'd call when we could. The Visitor Centers on the way up usually had internet for us to quickly download any messages and this is how we communicated.

Believe it or not folks traveled these areas fairly recently without carrying cell phones or computers. Now everyone is so geared to being 'in touch' every single second of the day. Thousands of travelers travel the highway on the way up and they are all willing to help if needed. They're in the same boat, too. The locals know all the ins and outs of getting any kind of help and they are awesome. They're very proud of doing what's necessary themselves. They are truly self-sufficient and think nothing of doing what they can for you.

Live on the edge for this trip... you will be rewarded in good memories and stories to tell!

If your business requires it AND you want mobile service regardless of where you are then your only option is to purchase or rent a satellite mobile phone while you are on your Alaska adventure.

Much of the Cassier Highway about 500 miles will not have mobile service. I broke down with a radiator leak about 200 miles from the southern intersection of the Cassier Highway and the Yellowhead Highway. Here was my exact location. I had to offload my car from my cargo trailer and drive 40 miles back north to get to Bell II to use their satellite phone for tow service.

Satellite phones are not cheap but if you need to stay in contact that's your only choice.

We use Verizon for both cell and Mi-Fi internet. It is wise to always check in with a Verizon store before starting any trips. Just before we left Alaska we were offered a program that increased our data by 6GB per month and gave us Canada and Mexico calling for free for an additional $5.00 on our bill.

Even if you don't pay for the extra for cell service while in Canada texting is still free. That's how we previously maintained contact with family and friends while in Canada.

We used the Iphone for weather reports, posting to Facebook, two or three times used it to call ahead to see if a certain campground had sites available. Both Dawson City and Chicken we called 2-5 days out to reserve a site. Most of the visitor centers had free WiFi.
