Anyone with knowledge of RV camping near Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico? We want to take the grandkids there for a special trip.

We were there, but about 9 years ago. The caverns are awesome, but the RV park at the caverns (Whites City) was a dump. At that time, there were nicer CGs closer to Hobbs, NM while still close to the caverns. Perhaps they have cleaned up that one at Whites City since we were there. Plan on staying a full day exploring the caverns. Bet the grandkids will love it.

We were there in October and stayed at Carlsbad KOA which is a really nice park. The downside is that it's on the opposite side of the town of Carlsbad and probably a 30 to 45 minute drive to the caverns.
The campground at White's City is still a dump.
There is a state park near the KOA that is reportedly nice also.

We were in Carlsbad last summer and we stayed at Brantly Lake State Park. Like some of the other campgrounds mentioned, it is about 45 minutes away from the caverns on the north side of Carlsbad on US Route 285. Most sites have water and electric only, but there are a few with sewer.
Enjoy the caverns. They are awesome!

We visited the Caverns in Oct 05 and stayed at the KOA. The Whites City CG appeared abandoned; if it wasn't, there were no occupants and it was littered. We didn't get a safe feeling just passing through. There is adequate day parking for RV's atop the mountain at the visitors center, but the road is a steep and narrow switchback.

We stayed at Carlsbad RV Park and Campground. Nice park with wide level spots. Gravel road and pads. About 2 miles from downtown and about 20 minutes or so from the caverns which makes it pretty convenient. There is also a Walmart about 1.5 mi away. The KOA looks a little nicer but pretty far away from the Caverns. Drove by White's City CG and it does look like a dump.

We too stayed at the Carlsbad RV Park and Campground. I think it was a Passport America Park as well and the town of Carlsbad is quite charming. Not a long distance to the caverns either.

When you were last there did the restrauants close on Monday? Everything except the fast food joints were pretty much closed. Very laid back town. Stay off the main drag through town. There is a business route(s) that parallels 285. Canyon is one but I don't recall the other. 285 is very busy, narrow and VERY rough.

We stayed at Carlsbad KOA for first week in March. Outstanding campground, owners and workers. A little far from town and park. Whites City RV looked like it had been cleaned up as we passed by on the road. Last stop there 3 years ago convinced me not to stop again but after seeing it this year we may reconsider if we go back. Enjoy the caverns and also the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens if you have the time.

Is the road into Carlsbad caverns too narrow and steep for a 38 foot Dutch Star pulling a 2001 jeep cherokee?? wondering if you had any advice as we wanted to visit for the day and were not going to stay in the area. thanks.
