Our favorite state campground is Canyon Point near Forest Lakes on the Mogollon Rim area, east of Payson. Store for supplies less than half mile away in Forest Lakes. Beautiful country with extensive pine forests, nearby lakes for kayaking, and plenty of hiking with a nice hike to the edge of the Rim. Good showers, some sites in loop A have electric. No sewer but there is a dump station. Early evening weekend programs in the amphitheater. One of AZ state campgrounds crown jewels. At 7,000 feet plus elevation so nice during summers. Can be chilly in late spring.

We are looking at visiting during the months of January and February, so we'd probably have to stay in the southern areas. Since we've never been to Arizona before, we'll want to visit all of the tourist areas, so we'll probably move around a bit.

Are golf carts allowed in your State Parks??

Arizona State Parks??

That one I cant answer but I suspect yes. Most state campgrounds are closed during the winter up north but mid state and south are open depending how high in elevation you go. County campgrounds can be very nice. Try Cave Creek Regional Park and McDowell Mountain Regional Park. Both in the extended Phoenix metro area. McDowell Mountain is attached to wonderful hiking trails maintained by the City of Scottsdale. Www.maricopacountyparks.net.

If you are going in January and February you can catch the big RV show at Quartsite,I've never been but heard it's something to see.

The name of the RV park inside Grand Canyon Nat'l Park is Trailer Village. Indeed, it's the best place to stay for visiting. You'd have to call and ask about the golf cart.

Wow! So much useful information!! I see that Trailer Village RV Park won't accommodate our 40' DP, so we'd probably stay someplace a little south and drive in for the day, especially since it's be January. Any recommendations?

Also, are there ANY county or state parks that offer sewer hookup as well as electric (50amp) and water? The prices are great for the state and county parks and seem to be exactly what we're looking for....and we can exist just fine, but it would be helpful. LOL!

Are there special fees for out of state visitors in the state parks?

Born2RV-

Did you call Trailer Village (877-404-4611) and ask them about coach length? I could not find anything on their Web site that said a 40-foot coach was too long.

I very highly doubt you will find sewer hookup at any state or county parks. These are economical campgrounds in generally less developed areas and not really RV resorts. If that is a deal breaker then I think you should limit your search to private RV places, some of which can be quite luxurious. Using a dump station can be a nuisance but getting closer to nature is more than a fair trade imho.

Arizona State Parks??

Seriously consider the Maricopa County (Phoenix area) Regional Parks. They have wonderful campgrounds. We are most familiar with White Tank Mountain Park as we volunteer there in the winters. 50 A, great water (not hard!), dump station, good views and world class hiking trails. Large spacious sites which can accommodate any Rv and clean, modern shower and rest room facilities. $35. 2 week maximum stay but can work around that. Only 40 sites and would not need a golf cart to get around.

Your 40' will definitely fit in some of the Trailer Village sites. Here's an excellent review but the owner of a 40'. This is a great blogger. She reviews all campgrounds they stay. Do a search on their site for many others.

I have a reservation there in OCT for my 45'. The site states

Quote:
Adjacent to Mather Campground, Trailer Village offers paved RV sites up to 50 feet in length (15.24 meters) with full hook-ups.

Thank you for all of the wonderful information!!! We have so many choices. However, hiking is out of the question as I am handicapped due to nerve damage during spinal reconstruction.......that's why I was asking about the golf cart and mobility, etc.

How far out do the state parks take reservations? Do any of you know?

We like to move about a bit.....maybe staying for a week here and there. What are costs like? Facilities? Bath/shower buildings since it appears many do not have sewer hookups? Safety and security? What are your favorites?

Click and search looks simple, and is a map which works for me.

Best of luck and be sure to revive this post in the Spring with a report back.

In 2015 we stayed in two state parks for several days: Cottontail Cove (south of Lake Havasu), and Dead Horse Ranch (Cottonwood).

Cottontail is on the river, and that was quite nice. Site had water and electric, with a central dump station. The shower facility was new(ish). We joined a night-tme scorpion "hunt.".
Quick correction -- the park on Havasu is called Cattail Cove. We go there a couple times a year with our boat and like it quite a bit.
