We have stayed here ( Lakewood RV Resort ) twice and found it clean, quiet and well run. That was in off season and it may well be a bit busier now. It is not right in Asheville but not an unpleasant drive in. Do see the Biltmore while you are there if you have time....buying tickets on line saves a few dollars !

Asheville NC KOA

In the summer of 2008, stayed at the KOA just outside of Asheville NC - Asheville East KOA
2708 Highway 70 East
Swannanoa, NC 28778

We had our 5'er then and got a wonderful campsite - parked along the lake. Open the door in the morning and there was the mist coming off the water. Some mornings, there were fishermen there too!

Wouldn't get that spot now with our MH. Too heavy for the small bridge leading to that part of the campground. The other sites I'm sure would be fine.

From there we toured The Biltmore and even drove down to the BMW plant in SC.

2nd the KOA East suggestion. Very roomy sites.

If you're going later in November, check out the Biltmore decorated for Christmas!

While at Mama Gertie's take the time to go about 5 miles east to Black Mountain and have a pizza at My Father's Pizze & Pasta (My Father's Pizza & Pasta :: Black Mountain, North Carolina > Home). Outstanding pizza.

Wilsons Waterfront Park

I would avoid Wilsons Waterfront Pk. The park is OK for a cheap overnight stay, if you can stand the loud noise of big rigs downshifting 50 feet behind you as they come down an exit ramp. Even at half price, I would stay somewhere else.

We have stayed at Mama Gertie's twice and found it to be nice and quiet. It is a little hilly, but not too bad.

For those who are "dog people", about 35 miles away near Rutherfordton is "Four Paws Kingdom". This is a park that's all about dogs. They're now closed for the season but we stayed a month there earlier this year and loved it.

We loved Campfire Lodgings in Asheville. Check our blog for details.

Contrary to CityonA-Hill's experience, we stayed at Wilson's for a few days, and loved it. Right on the river. We use a fan for 'white noise' (done that since college), and never noticed the Highway sounds.

The local recreation trail runs right through the middle of the park, so that might bother some people, or excite others. About 1/4 mile down the trail on one side is a huge recreational park, with everything you can imagine, including an inline skating rink and a velodrome! If you're a very active person, don't mind people running (literally) through the middle of the campground, and can tolerate highway noise, you'll probably like Wilsons.

It was on a weekend when we stayed, and Wilson's seems to operate on the honor system as far as payments.

It will probably be our primary place when we visit Asheville.
