Where is the best place to camp near Ashville? Sounds like the top 2 places are Mama Gerties and Campground Lodgings. Which do you prefer?

The only Ashville campground we've stayed in was Campfire Lodgings. The view from the premium sites can not be beat. From any of the other sites, it's just another campground.

I can not help with information on others except the campground at Tom Johnson's Camping center, just up highway 40 in Marion. Very spacious and well located for touring the area.

We stayed at a COE park with full-hook-ups and 50 AMP service called Lake Powhatan C.O.E. This is in the Pisgah National forest and very close to the Blue Ridge Park Way. Just off of I40 and near to the Biltmore Estate.

When we were in Ashville a couple years ago we stayed at Bear Creek. It's at the junction of I26,I40,I240 which makes for easy access in/out and to the various sites in the area.

Creekwood Farm RV Park in Waynesville. 20 minutes west of Asheville on I-40. Beautiful small park on a creek. Passport America. Very near to Maggie Valley and a reasonable day trip to Cherokee.

Asheville's Best CGs

We've stayed at both & would highly recommend both. These are the 2 nicest CGs in the Asheville area.

Moma Gerties is about 10 min east of downtown Asheville just off I-40 in Swannanoa. The upper level is new & has large sites with great views. Some of the sites have a deck A nice supermarket is near by. Moma Gerties has the nicer landscaping, there are a lot of high rock walls, terraces, and the roads are paved.

Campfire Lodgings is just north of Asheville off US 70 & is closer to downtown. Great views of the French Broad River with good gravel roads. Both CGs are wonderful for walking, but neither have swimming pools.

Both these CGs fill up quickly so call ahead as early as you can.

We'll be at one of these this fall.

Happy Camping,

Dave & Julie

Campfire Lodgings is a fantastic park
If you are real lucky you will see how the Smokey Mountains got their name.
An incredible sunset and dawn with the fog resting on the valley
floors
Should mention I've stayed there a few times (I'm an Aussie)

We will be at campfire Lodgings in a few weeks. But don't expect to find a premium site for more than a couple of nights. They are pretty well booked up for the rest of this year.

Great time at Mama Gertie's

We just got back from 8 nights on campsite #35 at Mama Gertie's. It was a great campground and we loved our site. The view of the mountains and valley were awesome. The deck with swing, cool firepit, wrought iron table and chairs was great. The people who run the campground were very friendly and helpful with tourist questions. The bathrooms were immaculate. There is no bath house up on the top level yet but are waiting for permit. I can't imagine a better campground and so easy to get to Asheville.
