Balloon Festival Boondocking

We will be passing through Albuquerque on October 13th/14th on our way to California. My Dw desperately wants to see a mass ascension morning on Saturday the 14th. I am looking for a spot to pull into late Friday night and see the balloons the next morning then be off by like 9am. I have 4 Walmart locations mapped out that look like we can view from that allow overnight parking. Looking for any and all advice as to where to parking lot boondock for a night from those who have done the same. Thanks.

I can't help you with the boondocking but here's another Baloon fest in Feb. A lot of wide open spaces.

Thanks for the info. That looks like a fabulous time but unfortunately we can't make that one this year. We passed through NM last year during the festival and stayed on the last Saturday night in Santa Rosa. Sadly, it was raining all day that Sunday the last day of the festival when we passed through Albuquerque. We saw a few stragglers the following week as we passed back through on our way back to Indiana. Hoping I can find a place to just park for the night and view the morning ascension then on westward.

I have been to the balloon festival one time. It was great. The year I was there were hundreds of balloons. If you are anywhere other on the grounds you will miss the fun of watching them fill the balloons, the coordination of filling all of them, all of the fire going on and the amazing number of people it takes. I hope to return again. One of the most enjoyable festivals I have been to.

Yeah, sadly this year is a pass through. We will make this a destination in the next year or so but will need to make reservations way in advance.

I live in Albuquerque. I would suggest Sandia Casino. They have alot of RVers that stay the whole week and more in their lot. They do have a somewhat designated area but for one night if that is full any spot would work. Especially if you go inside and gamble or eat. Bear in mind, the balloons generally fly north and west when looking for a one night stay.

Good information, thanks. What's your opinion of Balloon View RV park. They have an open spot (s) on the 14th? Kinda worries me that they would have a site during the fiesta.

It's a pretty basic park. No frills, but if the price is reasonable I'd book it. At least your guaranteed a place to park. They might even have a shuttle to the Balloon field. Probably a pretty decent view of the balloons, specially if they drift south that day. You should try and get on the balloon field. A definite bucket list experience.

We went in 2015, had 3 nights reserved in the festivals VIP East campground but we arrived 2 days early and staged at the Sandia Casino. The casino has an area demarcated for RV's and it was packed but we were able to find a spot. Great place to watch the balloons go up.

We did have some meals in the Casino and dropped some coin just to provide a little payback to them for their hospitality. We do this at any casino we stay at.

Not sure if Sandia Casino is still allowing free parking during the balloon fiesta.... here are some comments:

Sandia Casino

Thanks for all the great info. I went ahead and booked a site at Balloon View RV Park. $68 for 1 night but with hook ups and a guaranteed spot, just gine for our needs.
