Twogypsies makes a good point about going to SW CO before ABQ... impossible to predict the height of the Aspen color but if you have the schedule flexibility shoot for around the 3rd weekend in September to arrive in the area and spend a week or more before the Balloon Fiesta enjoying the San Juan mountains in the fall.

...and you'll have a blast at the Fiesta. We were there last year with a front row site with Monaco's Int'l group. Great group to go with and they have one of the best locations in the Balloon Fiesta Park.

...and if you like fireworks... walk out to the middle of the field (the north-south middle) and then as far to the western edge of the field as they will allow you to go. I guarantee you will be astounded and the smile will last for hours .

I am planning to go to the balloon fiesta in 2016. I saw that they open RV camping the Monday before the fiesta. I am planning to reserve VIP West based on the info I have read thus far for the entire fiesta. I was going to arrive on Friday...is there an advantage to arrive earlier in the week?

We arrived the day before the Fiesta began, mainly because that's when our particular group was going to start arriving. It was good timing - before the majority of folks started to arrive so we had no traffic issues. We stayed during the whole Fiesta and volunteered to crew during that time. We left the day after the Fiesta closed so that we weren't in the big mad rush on the highways.

I don't think there's any reason to arrive or leave any earlier unless you want to sitesee in the area while waiting for the Fiesta to begin. There's really nothing going on before the start at the Fiesta itself.
