Sage Creek is rustic and free. (The road is very rough). Cedar Pass on the East side has hookups and is paved. Wall Drug has a large parking area for RVs but is posted no ONP.

Sage creek is great. There is room for rvs, the road is a bit rough.....nothing tthat can not be done in a class a rv.

The night sky is top notch. we were out there about 3 weeks ago and will go back.

We went in our toad and used a tent. I would take the rv there with no worries.

Might want to think about that if there has been rain...

I drove my little low clearance fiat 500 there. Drove out after it rained. It was fine. I would think twice about it if there was maybe two days of steady rain but no need to not go over fear of road washing out or flooding over a normal summer storm blowing thru.

Can be very windy in that area. We stayed at the Cabela's in Rapid City (Exit 61 off I-90) 1000' NE. of exit.

There was maybe 10 RV's over-nighting. One guy in a class A said he has been there for a week, day tripping from there to badlands, Rushmore.....

The western entrance to the Badlands / Wall Drug is at mile marker 110. So your looking at 50 miles back to that entrance.

Other footnotes I have from our Alaska trip last year for for boondocking in that area:

~ I-90 exit 170 North side of exit (500ft.) dirt parking lot.

~ Rest area at mile marker 100 ( only 8-10 truck parking spots)

~ Flying J I-90 exit 61 (north of exit)

~ Walmart I-90 exit 59 (SE side of freeway)

You booked Cedar Pass? We are headed that way next week, trying to find a place for a night or two. I'm calling Cedar Pass to see if they have space, but it shows fully booked online.

Sorry in advance that I am a bit off topic but this is one of the reasons it is getting harder and harder to find a parking lot or something to just do an overnight......" One guy in a class A said he has been there for a week, day tripping from there to badlands, Rushmore..... "

For all us RVers who try to do the right thing........Do not be "that guy".......If you meet "that guy" out on the road do not encourage that type of camping. Let em know they are making life real hard for the rest of us.

Sorry for the off topic post, just could not ignore that.

Great advice, thanks! Our timing is firming up now so we know the dates we need. I can't wait to see that star show.

If you want to see this type of Boondocking, take a look at the Walmart in Fairbanks AK. RVers there weeks on end. Fact during our trip to AK. last summer, many of the Northwestern (USA) Walmarts looked to have "long term" RVer either taking seasonal jobs near, visiting people or people down on their luck and truly homeless.
