Bend- Crater Lake- Grants Pass- OR --CA Redwoods
My husband and I will be taking a trip this summer through central and southern oregon (specifically Bend, Crater Lake, Grants Pass, Ashland), and into northern california for the purpose of seeing the Redwoods. The purpose of our trip is not only to vacation but to explore those regions (excluding CA) as possible places for retirement in the next couple years. Any feedback as to MUST SEE SIGHTS as well as great CAMPGROUNDS would be greatly appreciated. Also we are traveling with our 22 month old son and 2 dogs. Thanks.

Crowne Villa in Bend, stay there and you are in a great RV site in a central location for scouting central Oregon. Not a bad place to retire as well. Make sure you get up to Sisters, my wife found the biggest Quilting store there, who knew?
Crown Villa RV Resort – Bend, Oregon
In Coburg Oregon or Salem the Premier RV Resorts are all nicely maintained and managed.

Tumalo, LaPine and Collier State Parks are all great places. Lapine has the Deschutes river, Collier has two rivers and a nice logging museum. From Collier it is an easy drive up to Crater Lake from the east. Leaving crater lake head west toward I5. There is Valley of the Rogue state park. Around here is Oregon caves, The Oregon Vortex, and historic Jacksonville. Just north of there is Grants Pass. The highway from here leads you to the coast and Redwoods. I am not a fan of private parks, the Oregon state parks offer some real nice camping experiences, Each park is different and unique.

Crown Villa in Bend is extremely expensive. Tumalo or LaPine State Parks along Hwy 97 are extremely nice.
For Crater Lake we like either Collier Memorial State Park just north of Klamath Falls on Hwy 97 or Joseph H. Stewart State Rec. Area on Hwy 62 between Crater Lake and Medford/Ashland. Have a good trip!

Ft Klamath has a decent RV park that is about 25 miles/give or take, from Crater Lake. We stayed there for 4 days last Aug and had a good stay. It is small and reservations are not a bad idea.

The high desert museum a little way south of Bend is worth a stop. Mentioned above the Rogue River state park at exit 45 on I-5 is a very nice place to spend a few days.
As far as looking for retirement I'm sure there will be many great places along the way. The ban or restrictions on logging on federal lands has financially hit southwest oregon counties to the point law enforcement agencies can no longer respond to many criminal activities. Probably similar in other timber locations. In Josephine county (Grants Pass) the sheriff's office has decreased from the sheriff and 22 officers to the sheriff and one officer. Pretty hard to protect & cover the county. Just something to keep in the back of your mind when chosing a retirement location.

We love Seven Feathers Casino/RV Resort on I5 as a base or stopover. Not a bad drive to Crater Lake from there.

The Oregon State parks are wonderful. We have stayed at all of those mentioned.
One of our favorites near Crater Lake is Farwell Bend, a USFS campground on the Rogue River near Union Creek if you can dry camp. With a US senior pass it is only $8 a night.
Josephine County has some nice county parks near Grants Pass. We have stayed at India Marry and Schroder.
We have also stayed at Umpqua Golf Resort in Sutherlin and it was nice.
7 Feathers has one of the best RV parks you will find anywhere. You can also lose your wages or catch some good entertainment.
Ashland is fun for plays and restaurants. Jacksonville is full of history and fun.
Near Medford don't forget Rogue Creamery (Central Point) especially for bleu cheese and Butte Creek Mill near Eagle Point. Harry and David is also in Medford.

We visited this area several times and there is a lot to see in Oregon. Check out my blog CruisinCondo. Scroll down to June 2012 & July 2011. I have some pictures of the Bend area and Crater Lake area. Enjoy! Mark
