Best Black Hills Camping

We would like to take the granddaughter (8 yrs old) to the Black Hills with hopes of showing her some natural beauty and maybe some history. When would the best time of the year be when it's not too hot and not too cold? I know that's difficult to judge but we'd prefer to error on too hot. We like secluded sites but from what we've heard that's a rarity in areas like Custer State Park. Needles Hwy looks like a must as well as Mt. Rushmore. We also like to stop at quirky, side road attractions as well - she seems to get a kick out of those.

For the sake of planning, we have a 32' 5th wheel.

We just stayed at the Rafter J Bar this past June. We loved it (Ranch) Where the Beauty of the Black Hills begins at your site!

Weather Rapid City is hot in the summer and cold in the winter at least when we lived there. Your best chances for mild weather would be spring and fall a they are a gamble, worst snowstorm we had was in late April and there was a flood never had one before or since. Sounds like you might like the Corn Palace and Wall Drug in Wall if your coming in on I 90 from the East. Both are rather quirky to say the least. There is a decent Private Campground with large pull through site in Wall and RV parking in town if you don't want to stay over.

Rafter J Bar. Tell them what kind of site you want. Out in the open, in the trees or looking out over the "meadow" (which will fill with deer each evening). Central location to everything you're there to see.

Custer State Park is the best for nature....perhaps as soon as school ends in June would be a good time.

Check out Wind Cave National Park. It is the most complex cave in the world. There is a campground that has never filled up. There are no hookups, but the scenery is great. The night sky is clear and star filled. The only time I would not go is when the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is going on, it is the first full week of Aug. Check out Jewel Cave, Devil's Tower, Agate Fossil Beds, The Mammoth Site and Hudson-Ming.
Have fun!!
