Best Months for Visiting the GR Canyon

Outside of the crowds with family vacations and such what about weather?

April/May/Sept/Oct/Nov

We've been there in those months, along with once in February and the weather was warm enough to wear shorts... not always the case though.

We're hikers so we like April and November

^^^^^^ Good advise ^^^^^^

-

We enjoy smaller crowds so we tend to try November to April - But we also usually come and go from the East and are able to avoid the biggest Crowds that come in from the South. -

Couple more thoughts - North Rim is our Favorite side - Less Crowded - Shorter season - Canyon de Chelly is almost always on our Map when in the area - Don't miss Page and the Slot Canyons. -

Just another perspective,

Twogypsies and Busskipper are spot on with ideas. You can combine their expertise and have a great time as well, not either/or by any means.

If you are full time and flexible would try for March/April or Oct/Nov as target months. I would lean towards March and November as the crowds will be far smaller, Just keep an eye on the forecasts. It can go from shorts weather to grab the parka time in one day. April and October are pretty good as well.

If you are not full time plan closer to summer - i.e. May and Sept. Should be OK weather and less crowded than summer but busier than the other months. You also start to see herds of tour buses in May and Sept that can, shall we say, diminish the experience. Don't remember many, or any in the other months.

I was in Williams 2 yrs ago in August. The temps in phoenix was 112. We were in the 70's, very comfortable, and never ran our ACs. In fact 2 morning we had to turn the heat on.

We were in Phoenix for Thanksgiving several years ago and decided to drive to GC. There was about 6" of snow. It was great!

Snow at the Grand Canyon is great. We went a few years ago during the Christmas break. We got to go into the park on Christmas eve and see it without snow. It then snowed all night. Then we got to see most of it again on Christmas day covered in snow. It was great. Probably less than 200 people in the park that day.
