Best time for Glacier National Park

We plan to hit the road again late August thru end of October, heading to the great American West again. We want to see Glacier and wondering the best time for that in terms of weather, crowds, etc.

We would not get that far until after Labor Day I am sure.

The weather can be beautiful then...or not!! Just watch the weather forecasts. Keep in mind after Labor Day, camping in the park is first come first served, no reservations. If I remember correctly they close third week of Oct. regardless of the weather. With that being said, fall is our most favorite time of year, cool nights & warm days, not to mention every once in awhile a light dusting of snow which quickly melts. Some of our best memories was having snow in Bryce, Yellowstone, and Yosemite. Not enough to create a problem, but certainly beautiful to see.

The main attraction is being able to drive or take the bus or tour up the Going to the Sun Road. This road opens and closes depending on the weather so there are no definite times of either. They try to have it open approx. the end of June or first of July. Closing for 2016 is definitely on Oct 16 but it could be earlier because of weather. I would try to be there by mid to the end of September so you'll have a better chance of being able to get on that road.

Each national park has a wonderful web site that gives road information, camping information, things to do and see and lots more. Check them out for wherever you go.

We were there in mid September and there had been a snow storm a few days before. We had resolved that we would see what we could but they opened the road that morning. Best time to go? Right after a snow storm. It was spectacular.

At the campground, you could tell who had done the loop because they had road dirt up to their door handles. It was worth it!

I was in Glacier last summer in July and it snowed on the mountains twice at night. It did not interfere with travel in the park. We didn't think the park was crowded at all at that time.

When you get there the best way to travel the Going to the Sun road is with the red bus tours. You miss a lot if you drive it yourself the drivers will give you so much info.

Good luck and have a blast.

Smlranger..... We were at Glacier several days around Labor Day a couple of years ago. Weather was fine and the road was open. But we did learn from some other folks that the road had been closed 1-2 days for snow twice in the previous 2 weeks. It's a tricky place, and summer is short.
